Anticipated World Cup Group I fixture

The upcoming World Cup Group I fixture between Norway and France at Boston Stadium is set to be a highly anticipated match. This game features two of football’s most prominent forwards, Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé, both of whom are leading contenders for the World Cup Golden Boot. Each player has scored twice in their first two games of the tournament.

The combined estimated market value of the two squads, according to Transfermarkt, is higher than any other match in the group stage. While both teams boast considerable talent, much of the attention will be on Haaland and Mbappé.

Contrasting styles, similar output

Despite their different playing styles, Haaland and Mbappé have shown remarkably similar output in Europe’s top five leagues since Haaland’s debut for Borussia Dortmund in January 2020. Mbappé has played only 11 more minutes across one additional league appearance during this period.

Haaland has a slight edge in goal tally, leading by two goals, while Mbappé has five more assists. When combining goals and assists, only Harry Kane surpasses both players, though Kane has played over 1,700 more minutes. In the Champions League, their playing time differs more, with Mbappé representing teams that have consistently competed for the continental title from a younger age. Haaland, however, is the only one of the two with a Champions League winner’s medal. Data suggests that while they have similar rates of combined goals and assists per 90 minutes in the Champions League since Haaland’s debut, Mbappé has been less effective in the knockout stages of the competition.

Their international records will be particularly relevant for Friday’s match. Their goal tallies for their respective countries are very close, with only one goal separating them. A notable difference is that Mbappé has played almost twice as many international matches as Haaland, having opened his goal account for France more than three years earlier.

Erling Haaland (left) and Kylian Mbappé will come face to face when Norway take on France to see who will win the Group I.Composite: Guardian Design; Fifa/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

France and Norway’s group stage positions

France only requires a draw against Norway to secure the top spot in Group I. However, finishing first could potentially lead to a more challenging knockout path, which might include teams like Germany and Spain, despite offering reduced travel and logistical benefits. France has already secured qualification for the round of 32 following victories over Senegal and Iraq. Their superior goal difference means a draw is sufficient to finish first.

With qualification assured, France is expected to rotate their squad. Assistant coach Guy Stephan will lead the team from the touchline in Boston, as Didier Deschamps is absent. Deschamps had previously used all five substitutions in their 3-0 win over Iraq, indicating a focus on squad management.

Meanwhile, Norway has been a standout team in the tournament, earning admiration for their performances, including a synchronised rowing celebration. Their victories over Iraq and Senegal have also secured their place in the knockout rounds. Coach Stale Solbakken’s side enters the match with confidence after a 3-2 victory over Senegal. However, the physical demands of that game could lead to significant rotation against France.

Solbakken has indicated that Norway aims to support Erling Haaland in his pursuit of the Golden Boot, with Haaland currently having four goals. Despite this, Solbakken may be hesitant to risk his key players given that qualification is already guaranteed. Haaland and captain Martin Odegaard, who are considered Norway’s most influential players, could be benched, with Alexander Sorloth potentially leading the attack. Patrick Berg, who assisted Haaland’s second goal against Senegal, might play in midfield. Additionally, central defender Leo Ostigard has strengthened his case for a starting position and could replace the injured Julian Ryerson.

Regardless of Norway’s rotation decisions, France will face a team in strong form, having scored seven goals in two matches and demonstrated resilience by coming from behind to beat Senegal. Kylian Mbappé’s double against Iraq brought his World Cup goal tally to 16, drawing him level with Miroslav Klose and placing him two goals behind Lionel Messi’s all-time record.

Early exchanges and quick goals

The World Cup 2026 match between Ecuador and Germany at the New York New Jersey Stadium saw a rapid start with both teams finding the net early. Germany, playing in their navy away kit, opened the scoring in the second minute. Leroy Sane received a pass from Florian Wirtz and confidently struck the ball into the bottom left corner, giving Germany an early lead. This goal came after Wirtz made a darting run and pulled the ball back for Sane.

However, Ecuador responded swiftly. In the ninth minute, Nilson Angulo equalised for Ecuador with a powerful low curler into the bottom right of the net. This goal followed a quick break down the left side after Nmecha lost possession. Angulo’s strike went through bodies and past Manuel Neuer, igniting the crowd at the stadium, which featured an estimated 55,000 Ecuador supporters.

Ecuador's Nilson Angulo scores their first goal past Germany's Manuel Neuer.Photograph: Dylan Martinez Credit: theguardian.com

The match saw some controversy surrounding Germany’s opening goal. Ecuador players were reportedly furious, believing there was contact from a high German boot on Pedro Vite’s head. Despite appeals, the officials reviewed the incident, and the goal was allowed to stand. Joshua Kimmich also approached the referee during this period.

Ecuador’s spirited response

Ecuador’s reaction to conceding early was described as excellent. They adopted a high-pressing strategy, aiming to unsettle the German side. This approach proved effective, leading to Angulo’s equalising goal. The team’s determination to win the ball back quickly after losing it was noted, with counter-pressing highlighted as an effective tactic in the tournament.

The game maintained a high tempo, with both teams creating opportunities. Nmecha had a low drive that went just wide of the bottom-left corner for Germany. Meanwhile, Ecuador’s Plata made ground down the right, and Angulo combined with Hincapie on the left to win a corner, indicating their continued offensive efforts.

Germany, already confirmed as group winners, made two enforced changes to their starting lineup. Nico Schlotterbeck was out due to ligament damage, and Nathaniel Brown had an adductor problem. Antonio Rüdiger and David Raum took their places. Ecuador also made two changes from their goalless draw with Curaçao, bringing in Joel Ordóñez in defence and Nilson Angulo in attack, with Pervis Estupiñán and Jordy Alcívar moving to the bench.

Nilson Angulo of Ecuador celebrates scoring.Photograph: Maddie Meyer/FIFA/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

Tournament implications and team dynamics

For Ecuador, the match was crucial as they needed a win to progress in the tournament. Should they finish in third place, two points would not be enough to advance. The atmosphere in the stadium reflected this urgency, with the large contingent of Ecuador fans creating significant noise, particularly after their equalising goal.

The German team’s defensive setup was observed to be a compact 5-4-1 when Ecuador had possession in their half. This deep-sitting formation raised questions about whether it was a tactical choice or a reaction to Ecuador’s pressure. Reports indicated that Germany had conceded in nine consecutive World Cup finals games, equalling a previous record from 1934 to 1954.

The match also had implications for Scotland’s hopes in the tournament. For Scotland to maintain their position, neither Ecuador nor Curaçao could win their respective matches. If Ecuador were to win, they would reach four points. If Curaçao also won against Côte d’Ivoire, they would need to win by a significant margin to affect Côte d’Ivoire’s goal difference sufficiently to surpass Scotland in the third-place table.

The game is part of the conclusion of Group D, where Germany had already secured the top spot. Ecuador’s captain, Moisés Caicedo, exchanged pennants with Germany’s Joshua Kimmich before the start of the match.

West Indies prepare for home Test series

The West Indies Senior Men’s team is preparing for two home Test series this summer, facing Sri Lanka and Pakistan. These series are part of the ICC World Test Championship, with the team aiming for crucial victories on home soil before their away series against Bangladesh in November 2026. The matches against Sri Lanka will be held in Antigua, while the Pakistan series will take place in Trinidad.

The West Indies have a strong record at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua, having lost only two of 13 Test matches played there. Their home record against Sri Lanka is also notable, as they have remained unbeaten in Test series against the visitors since 1997. Of the five series contested in the Caribbean since then, West Indies have won twice, with three ending in draws, including the most recent encounter in 2021.

Head coach Daren Sammy highlighted the team’s preparation, stating, “I think we’ve trained specifically to prepare ourselves for the conditions we may face. You know, what we expect here in Antigua and what we must do in order to match the Sri Lankan skill set and get the better of them. We’ve looked at the surface, and we have a fair idea of how it’s going to play. All our preparation has been tailored towards that.”

Key players and milestones

The return of fast bowlers Alzarri Joseph and Shamar Joseph, who missed tours to India and New Zealand in 2025, is a significant boost for the hosts. The pace attack has been a major strength for the West Indies at home, achieving a bowling average of 23.13 since the start of 2024, which is the best among full member nations on home soil during that period. Kemar Roach has claimed 54 wickets at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium at an average of 17.07, while Alzarri Joseph has taken 24 wickets at 24.95 at his home venue.

The series could see Kemar Roach reach a significant milestone, as he is six wickets away from 300 Test wickets, a mark achieved by only four other West Indian bowlers. Additionally, Jayden Seales, at 23 years old, is five wickets shy of 100 Test wickets, having taken 95 wickets in 26 Tests. If he secures these five wickets within his next 212 deliveries, he would surpass Mohammad Asif as one of the fastest bowlers to reach 100 Test wickets in terms of balls bowled.

Joshua Da Silva, Seales’ franchise captain and the wicketkeeper for the series, expressed excitement for both bowlers. He noted, “The senior pro (Kemar Roach) is the senior pro. We know what Kemar has done, what he’s capable of doing and what he continues to do.” He added, “I’ll be really excited for him to see him cross that milestone. The energy and the grit and determination, the banter that he has on the field, it’s relentless and it just shows why he is the cricketer that he is.”

Batting improvements and match details

The team has also shown marked improvements in their batting, with five centuries scored in eight matches in the ongoing cycle, compared to two in the previous thirteen matches of the 2023-2025 cycle. Batting coach Floyd Reifer attributed this to a change in approach, stating, “Over the last year we have put in a lot of work with the batters on their individual plans, and as a group and coaching staff we have pinpointed areas which needed to be improved on. Areas of strength we have sought to enhance, and we continue to see a better attitude towards batting and batting for long periods.”

The battle for the Sobers-Tissera Trophy commenced at 10 a.m. local time on Thursday. The first two days of the match have been designated as student engagement days in partnership with Cricket West Indies and the Ministry of Education and Creative Industries, with primary school students attending on day one and secondary school students on day two.

During the first day, Sri Lanka reached a score of 174 for 5, with Dhananjaya de Silva scoring 59 runs from 97 balls and Sonal Dinusha blocking a delivery from Jayden Seales. The partnership between Sonal Dinusha and Dhananjaya de Silva reached 58 runs, with Dhananjaya de Silva achieving his 20th half-century in Tests.

At one point, Sri Lanka was at 168 for 5 after 39 overs, with Sonal Dinusha and Dhananjaya de Silva having formed a 58-run stand. Roston Chase came into the attack for the West Indies. Earlier, Alzarri Joseph had taken 2 wickets for 43 runs from 8 overs, and Jayden Seales had bowled 11 overs for 47 runs without taking a wicket. At the drinks break, Sri Lanka was 150 for 5 after 34 overs, with Sonal Dinusha and Dhananjaya de Silva having built a 40-run partnership.

The West Indies fast-bowling trio of Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, and Kemar Roach had earlier cleaned up the Sri Lankan top order. Dhananjaya de Silva, the captain, was tasked with leading the batting after Dinesh Chandimal’s fifty.

Disciplinary Action Against Gull Feroza

Pakistan batter Gull Feroza has received an official reprimand and one demerit point from the International Cricket Council (ICC). This disciplinary action follows a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 Group A match against Australia. The incident occurred on Tuesday, adding to a challenging campaign for the Pakistan team.

Feroza was found to have violated Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. This specific article addresses the abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment, or fixtures and fittings during an international match. The breach took place in the second over of Pakistan’s innings.

Following her dismissal, Feroza, visibly frustrated, threw her bat and gloves in an aggressive manner towards the team dugout. This action led to the charge being leveled against her by match officials. On-field umpires Sue Redfern and Vrinda Rathi, along with third umpire Jacquline Williams and fourth umpire Shathira Jakir Jesy, brought forward the charge.

As this was Feroza’s first offense within a 24-month period, one demerit point was added to her disciplinary record. She admitted the offense and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Michell Pereira of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. Her admission meant that a formal hearing was not required, streamlining the disciplinary process.

Under ICC regulations, Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand. These penalties can also include fines of up to 50 percent of a player’s match fee, in addition to demerit points. In Feroza’s case, the ICC opted for an official reprimand and a single demerit point, reflecting that it was her initial disciplinary offense.

Pakistan’s Challenging Tournament Performance

The disciplinary setback for Gull Feroza coincided with a difficult outing for the Pakistan team in the Women’s T20 World Cup. They suffered a significant 113-run defeat to Australia, extending their winless streak to four matches in the tournament. This heavy loss further compounded their frustrations in the competition.

Pakistan captain Fatima Sana acknowledged that her side delivered their poorest performance of the tournament against Australia. She urged her team to engage in honest reflection and make improvements ahead of their final group game. Sana emphasized the need for the entire team to accept their performance and work towards betterment.

Despite the comprehensive defeat, Sana did highlight some positive aspects from her team’s bowling unit. She specifically praised the efforts of Nashra Sandhu and Sadia Iqbal. Both bowlers secured two wickets each and managed to briefly contain Australia’s batting attack, showcasing individual performances amidst the team’s struggles.

Sana expressed that the bowling unit started very well, particularly commending Nashra and Sadia for their effective bowling. She noted the need for more players to support these efforts to achieve better overall team performance. The team management is keen for players to maintain discipline both on and off the field as they conclude their World Cup journey.

Looking Ahead to the Final Group Match

With Pakistan already eliminated from contention for the semifinals, their upcoming final Group A fixture against the Netherlands takes on a different significance. This match presents an opportunity for the team to restore some pride and conclude a disappointing campaign on a more positive note. Both teams are out of semifinal contention, but the game offers a chance for a morale-boosting victory.

The incident involving Gull Feroza serves as a learning experience early in her international career. With only one demerit point and no suspension, she has the chance to move forward positively and concentrate on enhancing her performance. The team will aim to put both the defeat to Australia and the disciplinary incident behind them as they prepare for their last match.

Cricket, while an emotional sport where moments of frustration can occur, requires international players to uphold the spirit of the game and adhere to the ICC’s Code of Conduct. As Pakistan prepares for its final match of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, the team will be eager to finish the tournament on a winning note against the Netherlands.
