Reaction from the field

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is preparing to declare the results for Class 10 and Class 12 students in 2026, amidst significant changes in assessment protocols due to the ongoing Iran conflict. This situation has heightened the stakes for approximately 25 lakh students eagerly awaiting their results, as the board aims to ensure fairness and accuracy in evaluations.

In response to the challenges posed by the conflict, the CBSE has introduced a new assessment plan specifically for students who were unable to take their exams due to cancellations at select centers in Doha, Iran, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. According to the board, “Students who appeared in all exams will be evaluated based on their actual performance,” ensuring that those who completed their assessments are fairly graded.

For students who managed to take only a portion of their exams, the CBSE has established a method for evaluation based on their performance in the subjects they completed. As stated by the board, “Students who appeared in four exams will have their remaining subjects assessed using the average of their best three performing subjects.” This approach aims to mitigate the impact of the disruptions caused by the conflict.

The Class 10 examinations were successfully concluded on March 11, 2026, and historically, the CBSE has announced results around mid-May. This year, the results are likely to be declared in the second week of May 2026, a timeline that has been consistent in previous years. The board has also set a deadline for the submission of the List of Candidates (LOC) for the first phase of the Class 10 Second Board Examination, which runs from March 18 to 31, 2026.

Students wishing to improve their performance will have the opportunity to appear for a maximum of three subjects in the two-board examination policy. The examination fee payment for this first phase must be completed within five days of the declaration of results, emphasizing the need for timely action from students and their guardians.

While the Class 10 results are on track, the assessment plan for Class 12 students remains under review due to its complexity. Sanyam Bhardwaj, a key figure in the CBSE, noted that the entire process must be executed in accordance with the established deadlines, with access to the system ending at 11:59:59 PM on the last day of the phase. This highlights the board’s commitment to maintaining a structured and fair evaluation process.

As the CBSE navigates these unprecedented challenges, the focus remains on ensuring that all students receive the evaluations they deserve, despite the external pressures. However, details remain unconfirmed regarding the specific measures that will be implemented for Class 12 assessments, leaving students and educators alike awaiting further updates.
