Complaint Filed Against Hardik Pandya
“I believe it is an insult to the national flag,” stated advocate Wajid Khan Bidkar, who has lodged a formal complaint against Indian cricketer Hardik Pandya. The complaint alleges that Pandya disrespected the national flag during celebrations following India’s victory over New Zealand in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final.
The incident reportedly occurred after India secured a 96-run victory at the Narendra Modi Stadium, marking the team’s third T20 World Cup title. Videos circulating on social media show Pandya dancing and lying down with the Indian national flag wrapped around him, which has sparked outrage among some members of the public.
Bidkar emphasized the importance of respecting the national flag, citing Section 2 of the 1971 National Flag Act, which mandates that the dignity of the flag must be upheld. “The national flag is a symbol of the entire nation, and we can file a complaint here,” he added, indicating that the complaint could be lodged in Pune as well.
The Shivaji Nagar Police Station in Ahmedabad has confirmed receipt of the complaint but has not disclosed any details regarding potential actions that may follow. The complainant insists that Pandya’s actions violate the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.
India’s victory in the T20 World Cup was historic, as it marked the first time the tournament was won on home soil and the first instance of consecutive titles, having previously won in 2007 and 2024.
As the situation develops, Bidkar remarked, “Let’s see what happens next. I have filed the complaint.” The outcome of this legal action remains to be seen, with many awaiting further updates from authorities.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding any specific legal repercussions Pandya may face if the complaint is pursued further. The incident has ignited discussions about the significance of national symbols and the responsibilities of public figures in upholding them.
