Laljit Singh Bhullar stated, “I have complete faith in the law of the country and unwavering trust in the justice system. I have not run anywhere; I am here in my Punjab… I am voluntarily surrendering myself in Mandi Gobindgarh.” This declaration came as Bhullar was arrested in connection with the death of Gagandeep Singh Randhawa, a district manager of the Punjab Warehousing Corporation.
Randhawa allegedly died by suicide after consuming poison, during which he accused Bhullar of harassment in a video. The arrest occurred shortly after Randhawa’s family issued a 24-hour ultimatum for Bhullar’s apprehension, highlighting the urgency and emotional weight of the situation.
Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh confirmed that Bhullar was arrested from Mandi Gobindgarh. An FIR was registered against him under sections 108 (abetment to suicide), 351 (criminal intimidation), and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Notably, Bhullar had resigned from his cabinet position just two days prior to his arrest amid growing allegations of harassment. The political landscape has been charged, with opposition parties claiming that Bhullar’s arrest was influenced by pressure on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah indicated that a CBI probe could be ordered into the matter, which could further complicate the political ramifications of this case. The Punjab Police have also booked Bhullar’s father and personal assistant under the same charges.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann responded to the situation, stating, “For me, the entire Punjab is one family. If anyone in Punjab violates the law, strict action will be taken against them.” This reflects the government’s stance on law enforcement amid the ongoing investigation.
In a statement, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal emphasized the government’s swift action, asserting, “The AAP government took immediate action against that Minister without any delay or discrimination, not only removing him from his position but also getting him arrested.” This comment underscores the party’s commitment to accountability.
However, political analyst Sunil Jakhar suggested that the AAP government may be reluctant for the case to go to the CBI, fearing exposure of deeper issues involving AAP leaders. Investigations into the case are currently underway, and further developments are anticipated.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full implications of this case on Punjab’s political landscape, as the situation continues to evolve.
