Government Orders Increased LPG Production
The ministry has prioritised domestic LPG supply to households and introduced a 25-day inter-booking period to avoid hoarding and black marketing. This statement from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas highlights the urgency of addressing the current challenges in LPG supply, particularly as global fuel supply chains face disruptions due to ongoing geopolitical tensions.
In response to these challenges, the government has mandated oil refineries to ramp up LPG production specifically for domestic use. This decision comes at a time when refill delays of 2 to 8 days have been reported in major urban centers like Mumbai, exacerbating the difficulties faced by households reliant on this essential fuel.
Impact on Commercial Supply
The situation is further complicated by the complete halt in the supply of commercial LPG cylinders, which has severely impacted hotels and restaurants. P C Rao, a representative from the hospitality sector, noted, “Only about 10% of hotels and restaurants in Bengaluru received their LPG supply today.” This stark statistic underscores the critical nature of the supply disruptions affecting the food service industry.
To manage the distribution of LPG, especially for non-domestic sectors, a committee of three Executive Directors from Oil Marketing Companies has been established. This committee is tasked with reviewing LPG supply requests from essential sectors, such as hospitals and educational institutions, ensuring that these critical services are prioritized during the supply crisis.
Measures to Prevent Hoarding
To combat potential hoarding and black marketing, the government has introduced a 25-day inter-booking period for LPG refills. This measure aims to stabilize the supply chain and ensure that households receive their necessary fuel without undue delay. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas’s proactive approach reflects a commitment to maintaining access to LPG for all citizens.
As the conflict in West Asia continues to impact the global fuel supply chain, the government’s decision to increase LPG production orders is seen as a necessary step to mitigate the effects of these external pressures. The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected as the government monitors the LPG supply landscape closely.
Looking Ahead
While the immediate focus is on stabilizing the domestic LPG supply, the long-term implications of these disruptions may lead to further policy adjustments. Stakeholders in the LPG market are urged to remain vigilant as the government navigates these challenges, ensuring that both households and essential services receive the support they need during this critical period.
