Reaction from the field
The cricketing world is abuzz with the remarkable rise of Mangesh Yadav, who recently signed a contract worth Rs 5.2 crore with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. This significant achievement not only highlights his talent but also underscores the impact of perseverance and familial support in overcoming adversity.
Mangesh Yadav’s journey began in Borgaon, a small village in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh. Growing up in a modest household, he was inspired by his father, Ramavadh Yadav, who worked tirelessly as a truck driver to support the family. Despite financial hardships, Ramavadh prioritized his son’s cricket aspirations, providing Mangesh with Rs 24,000 for training in Delhi, a substantial amount for their family.
From a young age, Mangesh displayed an affinity for cricket, starting to play in the small courtyard of his home. His talent was first recognized by his uncle during local tennis-ball tournaments, which set the stage for his cricketing ambitions. However, the path to success was fraught with challenges, including financial struggles that often left him sleepless at night, worrying about how to fund his training.
To hone his skills, Mangesh moved to Delhi, where he trained under the guidance of coach Phool Chand Sharma. Phool Chand recognized Mangesh’s potential early on, recalling, “Mangesh was staying with someone in Delhi. I saw that he was a good bowler, but he didn’t even have enough to eat.” This mentorship proved crucial, as Mangesh credits his coach for his current success, stating, “If I am playing cricket today, it is because of Phool Chand sir.”
During his stint in the Madhya Pradesh T20 League, Mangesh showcased his prowess as a bowler, taking 14 wickets in just six matches, averaging an impressive 12.00 wickets per match. This performance not only caught the attention of scouts but also solidified his reputation as a rising star in Indian cricket.
Despite the challenges, Mangesh’s journey is marked by determination and the unwavering support of his family. His father, Ramavadh, expressed immense pride in his son’s achievements, reflecting on the sacrifices made along the way. Mangesh himself faced skepticism from extended family and society, who doubted his cricketing pursuits. He recalled, “When my father supported me in cricket, my extended family and society thought he was a fool, that I would be ruined.”
Mangesh Yadav’s success story serves as an inspiration to many aspiring cricketers, illustrating that with hard work, dedication, and support, dreams can indeed become a reality. As he embarks on this new chapter with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the cricketing community eagerly anticipates his future performances and contributions to the sport.
