Nensi Patel Makes History
Nensi Patel has made a significant mark in the world of cricket by becoming the first Indian-born cricketer to represent the New Zealand women’s cricket team. This historic achievement was celebrated on February 25, 2026, when she received her White Ferns cap during a ceremony at Seddon Park, New Zealand.
Patel’s journey to this milestone began in Karamdi village, Gujarat, India, where she was born. At the age of six, she moved to New Zealand with her family, where her passion for cricket flourished. Over the years, she has developed her skills and has become a prominent figure in the sport, particularly with the Northern Districts, where she has played for nearly a decade.
In her recent performances, Patel showcased her talent by being the joint-highest wicket-taker in the T20I series against Zimbabwe, claiming five wickets. Additionally, she contributed to the ODI series against Zimbabwe with two wickets, further solidifying her position in the team. Her consistent performance in domestic competitions, where she scored 290 runs and achieved three half-centuries, has undoubtedly paved the way for her selection in the national team.
Patel expressed her excitement about this achievement, stating, “It’s an incredibly special moment. Personally, it’s a dream come true. Being able to represent New Zealand at this level is both an honour and a responsibility.” Her journey reflects not only her personal dedication but also the growing diversity within the sport.
Her father, Hitesh Patel, played a crucial role in her cricketing journey, serving as her first coach and providing unwavering support throughout her career. Patel hopes to inspire young athletes from all backgrounds, saying, “I hope to inspire not only young kids of Indian origin but all backgrounds to keep striving for their goals and dreams.”
As a strength and conditioning coach, Patel balances her professional career with her passion for cricket. She earned a White Ferns contract during the 2022–23 season, which marked a turning point in her cricketing career. Her aspirations include playing at the Narendra Modi Stadium in India, a dream that reflects her roots and ambitions.
Looking ahead, the New Zealand women’s cricket team is set to face South Africa for five T20Is and three ODIs at home, starting March 15. This upcoming series will provide Patel with further opportunities to showcase her skills on an international platform and contribute to her team’s success.
