In Gujarat, recent operational changes in fuel distribution have led to disruptions, causing panic buying at petrol pumps. Citizens rushed to fill their tanks amid rumors of a potential fuel shortage, prompting concerns across the state.
In response to these fears, the Gujarat government has assured the public that there is sufficient stock of petrol and diesel available. Mona Khandhar, a government representative, stated, “Sufficient quantities of petrol and diesel are available at all petrol pumps in the state as per requirement.” This reassurance aims to quell the rising anxiety among residents.
The Indian Oil Corporation has confirmed that supplies to retail outlets are continuing smoothly, further supporting the government’s claims. However, some petrol dealers reported that operational changes have led to temporary disruptions in fuel distribution, resulting in increased demand and, in some cases, rationing at petrol pumps.
One dealer noted the extent of the panic, saying, “At one point, families were calling relatives, asking them to rush and refill tanks.” This highlights the urgency felt by many as they sought to secure fuel amidst the uncertainty.
Additionally, the Federation of Gujarat Petroleum Dealers Association has indicated that operational changes, including the requirement for advance payments, have complicated the replenishment cycles at some petrol stations. Mehul Patel, a dealer, explained, “Earlier, dealers would pay after receiving fuel deliveries. Now, payments have to be made in advance as companies require liquidity.” This shift has contributed to the challenges faced by petrol dealers in maintaining adequate supplies.
Despite the current situation, the Gujarat government has warned that legal action will be taken against dealers who keep their pumps closed while having stock available. This measure aims to ensure that fuel remains accessible to the public and to prevent further panic.
Officials have urged citizens not to panic or queue excessively at petrol pumps, emphasizing that adequate fuel is available. The President of the Petroleum Dealers Association of India also reassured the public, stating, “There is no fuel shortage in Gujarat and none is expected in the future.”
