The operation began when police laid a trap to intercept a courier delivering a package containing Tramadol premix. Anirudh Rai was arrested during this delivery, marking a pivotal moment in the investigation.

Authorities discovered that Amit had allegedly stored 20 kilograms of Tramadol premix in his warehouse located in Roorkee, while Prashant acted as an intermediary, connecting suppliers to buyers across North India.

Investigators traced the network’s operations back to Tanishq Jha’s factory in Patna, which was producing counterfeit medicines after its license had expired. This factory was part of a larger scheme that involved various players in the drug supply chain.

Delhi Police seized counterfeit medicines and psychotropic drugs valued at nearly Rs 50 crore during the operation. This seizure underscores the scale of the counterfeit drug issue in the region.

A senior Crime Branch officer stated, “The goal was to trace the supply chain behind the material,” highlighting the complexity of the investigation.

Further insights from a Crime Branch officer noted, “When factories shut down or excess stock remains in the warehouses, middlemen sometimes try to move the material quickly.” This reflects the opportunistic nature of the counterfeit drug trade.

According to an officer close to the investigation, “The profits would then be shared between him and the trader who had sourced the material,” indicating a well-organized network.

The pharmaceutical belt around Roorkee has many small manufacturers that emerged after Uttarakhand was carved out of Uttar Pradesh, contributing to the proliferation of counterfeit drugs in the area.

As the investigation continues, authorities are working to dismantle the entire network, which involves suppliers of raw materials, brokers, transporters, and manufacturing units.
