By Aditya Rao — 6 July 2026 — 4 min read

Former FIFA president Joseph “Sepp” Blatter has voiced concerns regarding the governing body’s decision to lift Folarin Balogun’s World Cup suspension. Blatter stated that football should not become a “playground for political power” following the overturning of Balogun’s automatic one-match ban, which occurred before the United States’ Round of 16 match against Belgium.

The decision to clear Balogun came after U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly contacted FIFA president Gianni Infantino to request a review of the red card. Blatter, who led FIFA from 1998 to 2015, expressed his views on X, questioning the independence of football’s disciplinary process.

“Red cards are not overturned by political phone calls. They are overturned by rules, evidence and independent bodies,” Blatter wrote. He further questioned FIFA’s direction, stating, “If a U.S. President intervenes with the FIFA President – and a player is suddenly cleared before a World Cup knockout match – the question is unavoidable: Quo vadis, FIFA? Football must never become a playground for political power.”

Controversial Decision and Reactions

Balogun received a red card during the United States’ 2-0 Round of 32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. The dismissal, issued by Brazilian referee Raphael Claus after a VAR review, was for catching Tarik Muharemović on the ankle, and it typically triggers an automatic one-match suspension.

However, FIFA announced that the suspension was lifted under Article 27 of its disciplinary rules. Instead of an immediate ban, Balogun’s suspension was placed on probation for one year. This means that if he commits a similar offence within that period, the suspension will be activated in addition to any further disciplinary action.

President Trump publicly thanked FIFA for reversing what he called “a great injustice.” This decision drew significant attention and criticism from various quarters.

The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) reacted strongly, expressing astonishment and indicating that it was exploring all available options to protect the integrity of the competition. Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia also criticised the ruling, describing it as unprecedented in World Cup history and questioning the message it conveyed about the tournament’s disciplinary process. Garcia remarked, “I didn’t know that [at] the Fifa World Cup 5 July is now 1 April, and that is April Fool’s. We are not defending the national team or the federation; we are defending football.”

Conversely, U.S. head coach Mauricio Pochettino welcomed FIFA’s ruling. He maintained that Balogun’s original dismissal was unfair and argued that his team had already been sufficiently penalised by playing with 10 men for the remainder of the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Impact on Disciplinary Process

The controversy has become a major talking point of the tournament, with Blatter’s remarks intensifying scrutiny on FIFA’s handling of disciplinary decisions. The incident has also led to questions about consistency in VAR decisions and disciplinary actions.

England coach Thomas Tuchel also commented on the confusion surrounding the disciplinary process after FIFA’s decision regarding Balogun. Tuchel questioned the implications for other red card incidents, such as the one involving Jarell Quansah in England’s 3-2 win over Mexico.

“Where does this start and where does this end now?” Tuchel asked. “Can we overturn it or not overturn it? What’s going on? Where to draw the line is the question that I ask. I have no answer to that.” He highlighted that both Balogun and Quansah were sent off following VAR reviews.

Tuchel further questioned the basis for overturning decisions, stating, “Who overturns this decision and on what grounds? And how far does this go now? It’s just strange for me. We just want to have consistency in the decisions.” He added that he believed Balogun’s incident was not a red card, despite VAR involvement.

The RBFA claims that FIFA’s decision contradicts its own disciplinary code and the competition regulations for the tournament. Article 66.4 of the code states that a red card automatically results in a suspension for the team’s next match, a rule that has been applied to all other red cards in this World Cup. The decision on Balogun also goes against Article 10.5 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Competition Regulations, which reiterates automatic suspension. The Belgian footballing body is investigating all options to safeguard “the legitimate rights of all participating teams and to protect the fundamental principles of fair play” in the sport. If Balogun plays, it would mark only the second instance in World Cup history where a player did not serve a suspension after receiving a red card, with the first occurring in 1962 when Brazil’s Garrincha played in the final after a semi-final red card, though automatic suspensions were not in place then.

By Aditya Rao — 3 July 2026 — 3 min read

Julian Nagelsmann has stepped down from his role as head coach of Germany following the team’s exit from the World Cup. Reports indicate that former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is prepared to take over the national team if he is approached for the position.

Nagelsmann’s departure comes after discussions with officials from the German Football Association (DFB) on Thursday. These talks followed Germany‘s unexpected elimination in the last 32 of the World Cup after a match against Paraguay.

Nagelsmann’s tenure and World Cup exit

Nagelsmann, who is 38 years old, assumed leadership of the Germany national team in September 2023. During his time, he guided the nation to the quarter-finals of the Euro 2024 tournament, where they were defeated by Spain, who went on to win the competition.

In the recent World Cup 2026, Germany initially topped Group E based on goal difference. They secured a 7-1 victory against Curacao in their opening game and followed it with a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast. However, a 2-1 loss to Ecuador preceded their knockout stage match.

The team’s journey in the tournament concluded with a loss to Paraguay on penalties, after the game ended in a 1-1 draw following extra time in Boston. This result led to widespread speculation regarding Nagelsmann’s future.

Following the team’s elimination, Nagelsmann had expressed his desire to continue in the role if the DFB wished for him to do so. He stated, “I am not someone who runs away.” He also acknowledged that changes were needed but affirmed his willingness to stay if the football association supported it.

Klopp linked as potential successor

Sky Germany has reported that Jurgen Klopp is ready to consider taking on the role of national team coach if an offer is extended to him. Klopp is currently serving as the head of global soccer for Red Bull Group. His existing contract reportedly contains a specific clause that would allow him to exit for the Germany job.

Several German media outlets, including Sky and the Munich daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung, have identified Klopp as the leading candidate to succeed Nagelsmann. The DFB president, Bernd Neuendorf, had previously announced an immediate investigation into the team’s performance at the World Cup.

Reports from Bild indicated that Nagelsmann was offered a severance package of approximately €7 million during a three-hour meeting. His contract, which was last renewed in January 2025, was set to run until 2028.

The DFB had been expected to make a decision on Nagelsmann’s future by the beginning of the following week at the latest, according to AFP sports subsidiary SID.

Reflecting on Germany’s World Cup performance

Germany‘s performance in the World Cup 2026 has been a subject of considerable discussion. Despite topping their group, their exit in the last 32 was unexpected for a team that had previously been World Cup winners in 2014.

Nagelsmann’s tenure saw the team achieve a nine-game win streak leading into the World Cup group stage, and they showed promise in their opening match against Curacao. However, the team ultimately faltered in the knockout stages, a pattern that had been noted in previous tournaments.

The DFB’s decision to replace Nagelsmann comes after two years of multiple opportunities for the team to improve their performance in major competitions. The official confirmation of Nagelsmann’s resignation is still awaited from the DFB.

The discussions surrounding Nagelsmann’s departure and the potential appointment of Jurgen Klopp highlight a significant moment for German football as the national team looks to address its recent tournament performances.

By Aditya Rao — 3 July 2026 — 4 min read

Senegal experienced a dramatic exit from the World Cup after conceding three late goals to Belgium, resulting in a 3-2 defeat. The match, played in Seattle, saw Senegal hold a two-goal lead before Belgium mounted a comeback in the final minutes of regular time and secured victory with a penalty in extra time.

The atmosphere in Dakar, Senegal, was initially filled with anticipation as the nation watched its team compete in the first knockout round. Habib Diarra opened the scoring for Senegal in the 25th minute, and Ismaila Sarr added a second goal early in the second half, putting Senegal in a strong position. Celebrations began prematurely in Dakar, with car horns and firecrackers, as victory seemed imminent.

However, Belgium scored their first goal in the 86th minute through Romelu Lukaku, followed by an equaliser from Youri Tielemans just three minutes later. The decisive moment came in extra time when a penalty was awarded to Belgium after a VAR review for a foul by Lamine Camara. Tielemans converted the penalty in the 125th minute and 44th second, marking the latest winning goal in World Cup history.

Coaching Decisions Under Scrutiny

The defeat has led to significant discussion and criticism regarding Senegal‘s coaching decisions. Former Senegal international Ferdinand Coly, who was part of the 2002 World Cup squad, described the collapse as “incomprehensible.” He suggested that substitutions made by the coaching team significantly altered the midfield and contributed to the team’s fragility once Belgium scored.

Coly believes that the problem lies not in talent but in preparation, criticising an over-reliance on data and statistics instead of developing a cohesive team identity and tactical strategy. He contrasted this with Belgium‘s coach, who was observed making adjustments until the final moments of the game.

The sentiment is echoed by supporters, including Ibrahima Diop, who highlighted a lack of concentration in the final minutes. Diop also noted the absence of a strong fan presence due to visa restrictions and economic challenges, which he felt impacted the team mentally. This pattern of late collapses has been observed in other African teams in the tournament, according to Diop.

Journalist Babacar Fall suggested that issues within the national team began before the tournament, citing uncertainty over the coach’s future, disagreements within the federation, and unresolved contractual issues as factors that created instability. He specifically pointed to a substitution made ten minutes from the end against Belgium that he believes broke the defensive structure.

Following the match, midfielder Pape Gueye announced a break from international football, stating he would not return as long as the current technical staff remains in charge. Gueye, who was substituted in the 66th minute, had been a standout performer for Senegal, scoring three goals and providing an assist during the campaign.

Echoes of Previous Heartbreak

The late defeat to Belgium draws parallels with Senegal‘s experience in the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) final earlier in the year. In that match against Morocco, Senegal was also affected by a controversial late penalty decision. While Senegal eventually won the game in extra time, they were later stripped of the title by a Confederation of African Football appeal board, a decision currently under appeal.

Pape Thiaw, Senegal‘s coach, expressed his disappointment, stating that the loss felt “cruel.” He acknowledged that the team dropped deeper after conceding the first goal, leading to the second. Despite protests from Senegal‘s players regarding the decisive penalty against Belgium, the decision stood. Thiaw admitted that it was difficult to accept but that they had to.

The absence of injured goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, who had been a key figure in previous matches, was noted. His understudy, Mory Diaw, was beaten by Tielemans‘ penalty and was also deemed at fault for Belgium‘s equaliser in the 89th minute. The comeback by Belgium from a two-goal deficit was the latest such turnaround in World Cup history.

This defeat has left a profound impact in Senegal, where football is seen as a significant source of national pride and unity. The team’s performance in the World Cup, including becoming the first African nation to score 10 goals in a single edition, had raised expectations among supporters that the team should compete with the world’s best.

The silence that followed the match in Dakar reflected a deep disappointment, not just at the loss, but at how victory slipped away in a matter of minutes.

By Aditya Rao — 2 July 2026 — 3 min read

Spain saw a goal by Marc Cucurella disallowed during their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 match against Austria in Los Angeles. The incident, which occurred just before the half-hour mark, led to confusion among fans and sparked debate regarding officiating decisions in the tournament.

The play unfolded from a corner kick, which found Cucurella amidst a scramble in front of the penalty box. The Real Madrid full-back struck the ball into the net, initiating celebrations that were cut short when referee Glenn Nyberg disallowed the goal.

The Disallowed Goal and VAR Intervention

The decision to disallow Cucurella’s goal stemmed from a foul identified during the build-up. Referee Nyberg determined that Pau Cubarsi had fouled Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager. This ruling was supported by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) team.

According to Rule 10.1 of the laws of football, a goal is only valid if no offence has been committed by the scoring team. Cubarsi’s contact with Schlager was deemed a violation of this rule, providing sufficient grounds for the goal to be chalked off.

Further reports indicate that the VAR review panel and the on-field referee concluded that a Spanish player, while in an offside position, interfered with the Austrian goalkeeper. This decision was made under FIFA Law 11’s offside interference clause, even though the player did not touch the ball.

The semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) flagged the offside position, and the VAR team then assessed whether this position constituted ‘interference with an opponent’ as per Law 11, Section 2. This assessment led to the recommendation to disallow the goal.

Debate Over Interference and Consistency

The disallowing of Cucurella’s goal has reportedly ignited a debate concerning the consistency of VAR decisions and the interpretation of interference rules. The ‘interference with an opponent’ clause in Law 11, Section 2, states that a player in an offside position is penalised if they ‘clearly attempt to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent’ or if they make ‘an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball.’

Guidance notes from 2024–25 expanded this interpretation to include scenarios where an offside player’s proximity ‘prevents an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or movement.’ This means that even without touching the ball, if an offside player’s presence is judged to have hindered the goalkeeper’s ability to perform their role, the goal can be disallowed.

Spain’s coaching staff have reportedly questioned the degree of interference, suggesting that the offside player may not have genuinely obstructed the goalkeeper’s line of sight. They noted that the goalkeeper appeared to dive in the correct direction, implying he might not have been impeded. They also raised concerns about consistency, citing at least one comparable situation earlier in the tournament where a similarly positioned offside player was not penalised, and the goal stood.

The incident adds to a pattern of officiating controversies that have marked the 2026 World Cup. While the technology for detecting offside positions is precise, the human judgment involved in interpreting ‘interference’ remains a contentious aspect of VAR implementation.

Despite the disallowed goal, Austria conceded shortly after, with Mikel Oyarzabal finding the net for Spain in the 36th minute.

Match Details and Broader Implications

The match between Spain and Austria took place at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on July 2.

The decision regarding Cucurella’s goal highlights the ongoing discussion surrounding VAR’s impact on football. Coaching circles are reportedly discussing the implications of such rulings, particularly how they might affect set-piece strategies in the knockout rounds.

The incident underscores the challenge of balancing technological precision with the subjective interpretations required in football officiating, a topic that continues to generate debate among players, coaches, and fans alike.

By Aditya Rao — 2 July 2026 — 3 min read

Spain secured their place in the World Cup Round of 16 following a decisive 3-0 victory over Austria. The match saw Mikel Oyarzabal score a brace, with Pedro Porro adding his first-ever senior international goal for his country. This result brings an end to Austria‘s hopes in the tournament, marking their first knockout appearance in 44 years.

The European champions, managed by Luis de la Fuente, delivered a strong performance in Los Angeles. Despite an early disallowed goal for Marc Cucurella due to a foul on the goalkeeper, Spain maintained pressure. Oyarzabal opened the scoring late in the first half, setting the tone for the remainder of the match. His contributions were crucial, as he continued his strong scoring form in the tournament.

Pedro Porro then extended Spain‘s lead by heading in a cross from Alex Baena. This goal further solidified Spain‘s control over the game, making a comeback for Austria increasingly difficult. Oyarzabal later converted a centre from Cucurella to secure his second goal of the match and Spain‘s third, sealing a comfortable win.

Austria, under the management of Ralf Rangnick, made three changes to their squad for the match, bringing in Kevin Danso, Paul Wanner, and Michael Gregoritsch. Despite these adjustments and a spirited effort, they were ultimately outclassed by the Spanish side. Rangnick attempted to replicate previous successes by introducing Sasa Kalajdzic, who had been a stoppage-time hero in a previous match against Algeria. Kalajdzic had a chance to equalize but headed the ball over the bar.

Spain‘s head coach, Luis de la Fuente, made two changes to his starting lineup, with Pedro Porro and Dani Olmo coming in. Marcos Llorente and Mikel Merino were moved to the bench. Lamine Yamal started in attack alongside Alex Baena and Mikel Oyarzabal, while Nico Williams was still recovering from a leg injury. Yamal has scored a goal in three appearances for Spain in this tournament.

Mikel Oyarzabal‘s performance was particularly noteworthy. He has proven to be a prolific scorer, with these goals being his third and fourth of the World Cup. His impact has been significant, especially after taking over from Alvaro Morata, who captained Spain to victory at Euro 2024 but scored only once in seven appearances during that tournament. Oyarzabal‘s ability to find the back of the net provides Spain with a different attacking dimension.

Speaking after the match, Oyarzabal expressed his satisfaction, stating he was happy to help the team progress to the next round. He acknowledged Austria as a physical and challenging opponent but felt Spain played well. De la Fuente also commented on the team’s performance, highlighting the importance of the knockout stage match and noting that while they were almost perfect, there are still areas for improvement. He emphasized that every subsequent match would be more difficult, requiring continued focus.

Spain‘s journey in the World Cup has seen them remain unbeaten in 34 competitive international matches within 90 minutes. They have also not conceded a single goal in this tournament so far. This defensive solidity, combined with the attacking talent of players like Lamine Yamal, who showed glimpses of his quality, positions Spain as a strong contender. Their next match in the Round of 16 will be against either Portugal or Croatia.

The team’s group stage performance included a draw with Cape Verde, which was considered somewhat underwhelming by some. However, their dominant display against Austria demonstrated their capability to perform under pressure in the knockout stages. The comfortable 3-0 victory sends a clear message to other teams in the tournament.

By Aditya Rao — 2 July 2026 — 3 min read

England secured a victory against DR Congo in a recent World Cup match, a game that featured a strong performance from DR Congo’s goalkeeper, Lionel Mpasi. Despite the win, the match presented a significant challenge for Thomas Tuchel‘s squad, who are now preparing for their next fixture in Mexico.

The match was marked by several dramatic moments, including a missed opportunity for DR Congo to extend their lead after going ahead, and a controversial penalty decision involving Harry Kane that was not awarded. Despite these incidents, Kane scored two goals, contributing to England’s progression in the tournament.

Kane’s historic performance

Harry Kane‘s performance against DR Congo was notable for its historical significance. Within a span of minutes in the second half, the England captain matched and then surpassed a significant scoring record in the FIFA World Cup. He moved past Pelé on the tournament’s all-time scoring chart.

Kane’s goals also positioned him in second place in England‘s World Cup knockout goalscoring history. This achievement further solidifies his standing among prominent tournament forwards.

One of Kane’s goals brought his World Cup tally to a number that drew him level with Pelé. Pelé‘s goals were achieved across World Cup appearances where he helped Brazil secure multiple titles.

Subsequently, Kane’s next goal moved him beyond Pelé on the all-time scoring list for the tournament. This rapid succession of goals allowed him to first equal and then surpass one of football’s celebrated goalscorers.

His performance also reshaped England‘s own World Cup history. Kane’s goals against DR Congo moved his career knockout-stage tally in the World Cup beyond Sir Geoff Hurst, whose knockout goals have been a significant part of England‘s tournament achievements since the 1966 World Cup.

Only Gary Lineker, with a higher number of World Cup knockout goals, remains ahead of Kane on England‘s all-time list. This places Kane close to matching another national record as England prepares for the next round.

Kane’s broader international career includes a number of goals in major international tournaments for England, encompassing both the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship. He holds the record as England‘s all-time leading men’s goalscorer and also the outright record for the most goals scored by an England player in major tournaments.

The striker first gained recognition as a World Cup marksman during the Russia 2018 tournament, where he scored a certain number of goals as England reached the semi-finals. His recent goals mean he has a specific number of goals in the current tournament.

In the match against DR Congo, Kane also made his World Cup start, which is the most by any England men’s outfield player. His overall club and country goal total for the season is a notable figure. His display earned him the Superior Player of the Match award.

Diverse tactical approaches in the tournament

The current World Cup has showcased a variety of tactical approaches, moving away from a previously observed trend towards a specific European style of play. Teams like Japan, DR Congo, and Paraguay have challenged more established football nations.

Paraguay, for instance, demonstrated an older tactical formation, featuring robust tackling. This style contrasts with some of the more contemporary European approaches.

Other teams, such as Germany, have employed different strategies, focusing on opportunities within the box. This method is distinct from the possession-based styles often associated with certain European clubs.

The tournament has highlighted that various cultures and styles of play continue to thrive, preventing a homogenization of tactics. This diversity has been a positive aspect of the competition.

The World Cup continues to deliver engaging matches, with the knockout phase often intensifying the competition. The next challenge for England is a match against Mexico, which will involve playing in different environmental conditions.

The match against DR Congo saw Lionel Mpasi, the goalkeeper, deliver a performance that included a series of saves against England‘s attackers. Despite his efforts, DR Congo ultimately lost the match.

England overcomes early deficit to advance

England secured their place in the World Cup round of 16 after a challenging 2-1 victory over DR Congo on Wednesday night. The match saw England come from behind, surviving what some described as one of the biggest scares of their campaign. Despite the loss, DR Congo’s performance in Atlanta earned them recognition, as they pushed one of the tournament favorites.

Against many pre-match expectations, DR Congo took the lead early in the game. A deep cross from the right found Brian Cipenga unmarked at the far post. Cipenga took a touch before firing a low shot into the bottom-left corner, beating Jordan Pickford at his near post and igniting celebrations among Congolese supporters. His somersault celebration mirrored the quality of the finish.

England’s initial attempts to equalize were thwarted. Around the half-hour mark, Declan Rice delivered a cross that Jude Bellingham headed towards the top-right corner, but Lionel Mpasi produced a one-handed save to deny him. Five minutes later, Noni Madueke set up Marcus Rashford, whose close-range effort was cleared off the line by Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Tuchel’s adjustments and Kane’s decisive goals

Thomas Tuchel’s words during a hydration break appeared to calm England’s nerves, though Mpasi continued to be a formidable presence in goal, making several saves to maintain DR Congo’s slender lead. DR Congo nearly doubled their advantage before half-time when Wan-Bissaka’s cross found Yoane Wissa, whose first-time shot hit the base of the post.

Moments later, Harry Kane went down in the Congolese box under contact from Mpasi, appealing for a penalty, but the referee and VAR dismissed the claim, judging that Kane had exaggerated the fall. As the second half progressed, England created opportunities but struggled to convert, with Mpasi remaining steadfast, much to Tuchel’s visible agitation.

The breakthrough for England came in the 75th minute. Kane, drifting away from his marker, met Anthony Gordon’s floated cross and guided a header past Mpasi, who reacted slightly late. England’s captain then delivered the decisive blow with less than five minutes of regulation time remaining. He took one touch to shift the ball away from Axel Tuanzebe before unleashing a right-footed shot that found the roof of the net, securing England’s survival.

Thomas Tuchel hugs the England match-winner after the 2-1 victory against the Democratic Republic of the Congo.Photograph: Ronald Wittek/EPA Credit: theguardian.com

The match highlighted England’s need for improvement, particularly as they prepare for their next fixture. The team had not produced a complete performance in any of their first four games, appearing tired, fractious, and unbalanced at times, except for a strong showing against Croatia in Dallas. They will depart Atlanta with several issues to address.

Challenges and preparations for Mexico City

DR Congo’s fearless approach was evident from the start, as they maintained possession, executed passing combinations, and pressured England with their counterpress. Seven minutes into the game, Chancel Mbemba initiated a move that exposed England’s defense, leading to Cipenga’s goal. Noah Sadiki‘s run from midfield drew Djed Spence out of position, and Ezri Konsa was drawn to Wissa, leaving Spence exposed as Madueke stayed high.

The first half was marked by disarray within the England squad. Bellingham was seen expressing frustration towards the bench and received a booking after losing possession and clashing with Nathanaël Mbuku. Rice showed his anger after the goal, and Reece James intervened to calm Bellingham during the first hydration break. Pickford also expressed his frustration, hitting a pass out of play and urging his teammates to settle down. Elliot Anderson struggled in midfield, and Rashford’s performance included a ball running under his foot and out for a throw, followed by his failure to track back, which allowed DR Congo to create another chance.

Reece James talks some sense into Jude Bellingham during the first hydration break.Photograph: Paul Childs Credit: theguardian.com

A more clinical side might have extended their lead before half-time. Rice’s fitness appeared to be a concern, and the defense seemed vulnerable. Spence’s performance at right-back was noted, especially with Tino Livramento having returned home, Jarell Quansah dealing with a twisted ankle, and James having tweaked a hamstring. Rashford’s series of wayward crosses from the left led to boos from the crowd when one of his deliveries went out of play, suggesting he had played himself out of the team.

Tuchel’s tactical changes in the second half proved crucial. With 20 minutes remaining, he made his final substitutions, replacing wingers Madueke and Rashford with Bukayo Saka and Gordon. He then removed Spence, shifted Rice to right-back, and introduced Eberechi Eze to add unpredictability in the final third. The equalizer, which arrived five minutes later, was a direct result of these adjustments, with Eze combining with Rice, who then crossed to Gordon, who set up Kane’s header.

This goal involved two substitutes and a player in an unfamiliar position, creating the impression that Tuchel had the situation under control. Anthony Barry, Tuchel’s assistant, emphasized the importance of England maintaining their processes during his half-time interview, advising against playing gung-ho football. England continued to probe, and their squad depth made a difference. Gordon, who had struggled in previous group stage matches against Ghana and Croatia, finished with two assists, including the clever pass that led to Kane’s winning goal in the 86th minute. England will face Mexico in Mexico City on Sunday night.

Saibari Joins Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich has officially announced the signing of Ismael Saibari, the Morocco international midfielder, from PSV Eindhoven. Saibari has agreed to a long-term contract with the German club, which will keep him at the Allianz Arena until June 2031. This move marks a significant investment for Bayern, securing a player who has garnered attention for his performances.

According to reports, the transfer fee for Saibari is in the region of €50m, with potential for it to increase to €52m through performance-related bonuses. This places him among some of the most expensive signings in the club’s history. Another report indicates a fee that could rise to €55 million. Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating that the club had identified Saibari early due to his skills and had presented him with a clear vision for his future at Bayern. Eberl believes Saibari will bring additional quality and unpredictability to the team’s attacking play.

Christoph Freund, Bayern’s sporting director, highlighted Saibari’s track record, noting his three consecutive Dutch championship titles with Eindhoven and his Champions League experience. Freund also emphasized Saibari’s current form at the World Cup, describing him as versatile, intense, and bold in his play, possessing the hunger and goal threat desired at Bayern. Saibari himself acknowledged the influence of coach Vincent Kompany in his decision, stating that joining Bayern, one of the world’s biggest clubs, was a childhood dream and that he aims to win as many trophies as possible.

Career Highlights and International Impact

Saibari arrives in Munich following a successful period in the Netherlands with PSV. During his tenure, he contributed significantly with 42 goals and 29 assists, playing a key role in the club’s three league titles. He was also named the Dutch Footballer of the Year. His club form has extended to the international stage, where he has been a crucial player for Morocco during their current World Cup campaign in North America.

The midfielder has made an impact in the tournament, scoring against Brazil, Scotland, and Haiti. He also converted the decisive penalty in the shootout victory over the Netherlands in the round of 16, which advanced Morocco to the next stage. With 33 caps and 12 goals for Morocco, Saibari is recognized as one of the clinical finishers from the continent. He was part of the Morocco squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations title.

The 25-year-old, born on January 28, 2001, has demonstrated versatility on the field, capable of operating as a box-to-box midfielder, an advanced playmaker, or even a false nine. His playing style has drawn comparisons to Jude Bellingham due to his blend of attacking drive, physical power, and technical quality. Saibari excels at carrying the ball through midfield, utilizing his athleticism, dribbling, and strength to create scoring opportunities.

Player Profile and Future Prospects

Saibari’s journey to Bayern follows a six-year progression at PSV Eindhoven, where he moved from PSV Jong in the Dutch second tier to become a key first-team player. He was awarded the 2026 Eredivisie Player of the Year. His international career has seen him represent Morocco at various levels, including two caps at Under-20 and 12 at U23, where he helped Morocco win the U23 Africa Cup of Nations.

Saibari holds triple citizenship—Spanish, Belgian, and Moroccan—but chose to represent his parents’ homeland internationally. His commitment and professionalism have been noted by former Morocco head coach Walid Regragui, who described him as disciplined and hardworking. PSV head coach Peter Bosz also praised Saibari’s ability to consistently get into scoring positions and his high efficiency.

The midfielder wears the No.34 shirt at club level as a tribute to Abdelhak ‘Appie’ Nouri, a former Ajax midfielder whose career was cut short due to a cardiac arrest. Saibari’s move to Bayern Munich positions him to compete for major titles, including the Champions League, in the upcoming seasons.

Historic Victory at Azteca

Mexico secured a significant World Cup knockout stage victory, defeating Ecuador 2-0 in a match that saw them break a 40-year drought without a win in this phase of the tournament. The win at the iconic Azteca Stadium propels El Tri into the round of 16, marking their first knockout stage triumph since 1986.

The match, which was delayed by an hour due to an electric storm, ultimately delivered a memorable performance from the Mexican side. Javier Aguirre’s players displayed an impressive first-half showing, setting the tone for their historic win.

The opening goal came in the 22nd minute from Julián Quiñones, who received a clipped pass from Jésus Gallardo and fired the ball into the net. This was Quiñones’ third goal of the tournament.

Just nine minutes later, Raul Jiménez, the striker, doubled Mexico’s lead. He capitalized on a defensive error, exchanging passes with Quiñones before scoring past Ecuador’s goalkeeper, Hernán Galíndez. This marked Jiménez’s second goal of the tournament.

Jiménez strikes to put Mexico two up.Photograph: David Ramos/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

The victory holds particular significance for Aguirre, who had overseen two previous early exits in 2002 and 2010 during his earlier tenures. He expressed that no other victory compared to this one, given it occurred at home with their supporters.

Impact of Travel on Performance

The match was not without its pre-game complications, particularly for the Ecuadorian team. Ecuador lodged a formal complaint regarding significant travel delays on their journey to Mexico City. What was anticipated to be a three-and-a-half-hour flight, plus travel to the hotel, extended into a nine-hour journey.

This complaint highlighted a broader issue within the current World Cup format, which spans across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The extensive distances necessitate long flights, disrupting team routines and adding logistical challenges to preparation.

According to physiotherapist and doctor in Biomedicine and Health Sciences, Julio Caballero, travel fatigue can significantly impact a team’s performance. He noted that prolonged sitting, disrupted sleep, and accumulated physical and mental stress during travel are not minor details, especially when athletes are competing at their physical limits.

Caballero explained that while travel may not directly cause injuries, it can reduce a player’s capacity to tolerate the demands of a high-intensity match. Prevention strategies, such as activating muscles before travel, avoiding immobility during flights, and ensuring adequate hydration, are crucial for mitigating these effects.

Looking Ahead to the Round of 16

Mexico’s goalkeeper, Raúl Rangel, made a crucial save from John Yeboah before halftime, ensuring Mexico maintained their lead. In the second half, Ecuador’s best opportunity came from substitute Kevin Rodríguez, who shot wide. Towards the end of the match, Piero Hincapié was dismissed for violating mouth-covering rules.

Erik Lira, Jorge Sánchez and Jesús Gallardo of Mexico celebrate after Mexico’s last-32 win over Ecuador in Mexico City.Photograph: MB Media/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

The Mexican team’s performance was also bolstered by the exceptional play of 17-year-old Gilberto Mora. His range and quick feet were instrumental in Mexico’s strong start, with his presence on the right side of the midfield proving difficult for Ecuador to manage.

With this win, Mexico extended its unbeaten run to a number of games and became the first CONCACAF side to eliminate a CONMEBOL side in a World Cup knockout match. South American teams had won the previous five such encounters.

Mexico will now face the winner of the match between England and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the round of 16. This upcoming tie is scheduled to take place on Sunday, July 5, 2026, and will be the last of this summer’s matches to be held in Mexico.

Mexico celebrate after the full-time whistle.Photograph: José Méndez/EPA Credit: theguardian.com

Aguirre, who became a grandfather on Monday, expressed his eagerness to assess the next opponent, stating that he and his staff would watch the England versus DR Congo game to prepare. He emphasized the need for his team to remain sharp to maintain their momentum.

France secures dominant victory against Sweden

France achieved a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Sweden in the World Cup round of 32, maintaining a perfect record of four wins from four matches. The match, held on a hot afternoon in East Rutherford, saw Kylian Mbappé score twice and Michael Olise deliver an impressive performance with two assists, setting up a last-16 clash with Paraguay.

The French squad showcased strong attacking play and remarkable goals, with their quality becoming more apparent upon reflection. Didier Deschamps‘ men dominated possession and shots on goal against a Swedish side that had qualified for the tournament through the playoffs.

Mbappé matches Messi’s goal tally

Kylian Mbappé‘s two goals in the match brought him level with Lionel Messi in the golden boot race for this World Cup, both having scored six goals. The France captain now has a total of 18 World Cup goals, just one shy of Messi‘s overall record of 19. Mbappé celebrated his first goal by embracing coach Didier Deschamps.

The opening goal came just before half-time. After an effort from Olise was tipped behind by Swedish goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom, Ousmane Dembelé and Olise combined from the resulting corner. They then found Mbappé, who bent a shot beyond Zetterstrom from inside the box.

Before the first goal, France had already hit the woodwork twice, once through Mbappé and once through Olise. Mbappé also had an earlier effort in the 20th minute disallowed due to a tight offside call.

Olise’s pivotal role in France’s attack

Michael Olise was instrumental throughout the game, delivering a virtuoso performance. He provided the assist for Bradley Barcola‘s goal eight minutes into the second half. The play began with Sweden losing possession, which Aurelién Tchouaméni seized and passed to Olise. Olise then threaded a pass between the Swedish centre-half and full-back, perfectly weighted for Barcola to strike the ball into the net.

France’s Bradley Barcola thumps home their second goal.Photograph: John Sibley Credit: theguardian.com

Olise continued to be a central figure in the second half, drifting across the forward line, dropping deep, and running beyond, constantly seeking the ball to create danger. He forced a sprawling save from Zetterstrom with an effort from distance. He also contributed to a mesmerising passing triangle with Adrien Rabiot and Jules Koundé on the halfway line.

Olise secured his second assist of the game, and Mbappé his second goal, with 15 minutes remaining. This goal was described as another piece of deft play from Olise, a perfectly timed run from Mbappé, and a repeat finish, curling into the far side of the goal.

Sweden’s efforts and upcoming challenge for France

Sweden, despite their compact and brave defending, struggled to create enough chances against the dominant French side. Their counterattack options, including Anthony Elanga and Viktor Gyökeres, looked to release Alexander Isak, but efforts from Isak were contained by Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba, not troubling goalkeeper Mike Maignan. Elliot Stroud also had a follow-up shot go over the bar after Jules Koundé intercepted a pass to Gyökeres.

France will now face Paraguay in the last 16 on Saturday in Philadelphia. This upcoming match will be a repeat of a World Cup last-16 encounter from 1998, where France secured a 1-0 victory in extra time.
