The Zojila Pass, known for its treacherous conditions, has long posed significant risks to travelers, especially during the winter months. Historically, the pass would remain closed for nearly five months, isolating Ladakh from the rest of India. This situation was expected to improve with the ongoing construction of the Zojila Tunnel, which aims to provide year-round connectivity between Srinagar, Drass, Kargil, and Leh.

However, a recent avalanche has drastically altered the landscape of expectations. On a fateful Friday afternoon, around 3 PM, the avalanche struck near Zero Point, at an elevation of 3,528 meters (11,649 ft), burying several vehicles traveling from Srinagar to Kargil. This tragic event resulted in the deaths of at least seven people, with five others sustaining injuries. Rescue teams have been working tirelessly, employing JCBs to clear the snow and rescue trapped passengers.

As of now, seven bodies have been retrieved, but two individuals remain unaccounted for. The avalanche also trapped three to four vehicles, effectively blocking the Srinagar-Kargil highway. Authorities have urged travelers to avoid the route until conditions stabilize, emphasizing the ongoing rescue and clearance operations.

The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh expressed deep concern over the tragedy, highlighting the urgent need for improved safety measures in the region. The Zojila Pass is notorious for its steep gradients, narrow corridors, and sudden weather shifts, making it one of the most perilous stretches in the Himalayas.

While the Zojila Tunnel is expected to dramatically transform travel conditions by providing a safe, weather-proof corridor, the recent avalanche underscores the immediate dangers faced by those traversing the pass. The anticipated travel time through the tunnel is expected to be significantly reduced to just 15-20 minutes, compared to the current travel time of three to four hours across the pass.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact number of vehicles trapped under the avalanche, but the incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by winter conditions in the region. As rescue efforts continue, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of travelers and addressing the infrastructural vulnerabilities that have long plagued this vital route.

The wider picture

World Tuberculosis Day serves as a reminder that tuberculosis is preventable, curable, and eliminable. Observed annually on March 24, this day aims to highlight the urgent need to eliminate tuberculosis, a disease that continues to pose a significant public health challenge, particularly in India, which bears the largest burden of tuberculosis globally. The theme for World TB Day 2026 is ‘Yes! We Can End TB!’, reflecting a hopeful and proactive stance against this infectious disease.

On March 24, 2026, World Tuberculosis Day was observed in Kargil, India, with significant activities organized by the District Health Society Kargil. The event included mass screening camps aimed at identifying and treating tuberculosis cases in the district. The Deputy Commissioner of Kargil emphasized the crucial role of students in spreading awareness about tuberculosis, highlighting the importance of community involvement in health initiatives.

Tuberculosis spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks, making awareness and early detection vital in controlling its spread. The District Tuberculosis Officer shared data indicating the number of TB cases notified in Kargil over the past five years, underscoring the ongoing challenge the district faces in combating this disease.

In addition to local efforts, the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan aims to eliminate tuberculosis from India by 2025. This initiative is supported by the Ni-kshay Mitra program, which encourages community members to assist in the treatment and care of TB patients. The Nikshay digital portal plays a crucial role in this initiative, enabling healthcare authorities to track patients and monitor their treatment adherence effectively.

Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) presents an additional challenge, requiring longer and more complex treatment regimens that can last between 9 and 18 months. The complexity of DR-TB treatment underscores the need for sustained investment and resources in public health initiatives to ensure that all patients receive the care they need.

The TB CAB Weekly Newsletter, dedicated to World TB Day, includes calls to action and advocacy resources aimed at mobilizing support for tuberculosis elimination efforts. As health officials and community leaders rally together, they emphasize that ending TB is achievable, even in today’s challenging global environment, provided there is strong leadership, investment, solidarity, and decisive action.

As Kargil continues its efforts to combat tuberculosis through awareness campaigns and screening initiatives, observers remain hopeful that these actions will lead to a significant reduction in TB cases in the region. The collective commitment to ending tuberculosis reflects a broader global movement to eradicate this disease, ensuring a healthier future for all.
