AIIMS Mangalagiri has made significant strides in medical education and healthcare services since its inception. The institution began its MBBS program in 2018 with an initial intake of 50 students. Today, it boasts a total of 748 MBBS students, with an annual intake of 125 students. Recently, AIIMS Mangalagiri conferred degrees on 49 MBBS graduates, five MD/MS postgraduate students, and four Post-Doctoral Certificate Course students.

In addition to its educational achievements, AIIMS Mangalagiri has completed an impressive 31 lakh outpatient department (OPD) consultations, with a current daily footfall of around 3,500 to 4,000 patients. This underscores the institution’s vital role in addressing the healthcare needs of the community.

Recently, AIIMS Mangalagiri installed a Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing (NAAT) system, which is the first of its kind among all AIIMS in South India. This advanced system, which cost approximately ₹1.73 crore, significantly enhances the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities. It can detect viral RNA/DNA with high sensitivity, enabling early identification of infections such as HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.

Ahanthem Singh, a representative from the institution, commented on the importance of the NAAT system, stating, “The NAAT system enhances safety by significantly reducing the diagnostic window period.” This advancement is expected to improve patient outcomes and contribute to the overall safety of medical procedures.

Union Minister Anupriya Patel highlighted the government’s commitment to improving healthcare, stating, “The Union government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is giving utmost priority to the medical sector.” This reflects a broader initiative to enhance healthcare access and quality for the population.

As AIIMS Mangalagiri continues to grow, it remains focused on its mission to provide quality medical education and healthcare services. Observers anticipate that the institution will further expand its capabilities and continue to play a crucial role in the region’s healthcare landscape.

What recent developments have emerged from the National Medical Commission (NMC) regarding medical education and intern stipends? The NMC has launched an online feedback system aimed at undergraduate medical students, allowing them to anonymously register complaints and evaluate their colleges’ infrastructure and faculty.

The newly introduced ‘Student Feedback Form’ seeks input on various aspects of medical colleges and the overall educational experience. According to the NMC, “The feedback aims to gather valuable anonymous feedback on various aspects of your medical college and medical education experience.” This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the quality of medical education in India.

In addition to the feedback system, the NMC has issued a warning to students against enrolling in foreign medical institutes in Uzbekistan that do not comply with the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) regulations. These regulations stipulate that students must complete a minimum of 54 months of education at a single institution, followed by a 12-month internship at the same foreign university.

Another pressing issue addressed by the NMC is the non-payment of stipends to MBBS interns. The NMC has identified 60 medical colleges, including 27 private institutions, that have failed to pay their interns. The Supreme Court has been hearing this issue since 2022, highlighting the ongoing struggle for fair compensation for medical interns.

As part of its enforcement actions, the NMC imposed a penalty of Rs 1 crore on seven colleges for not providing stipend payment information. The Chief Justice remarked that not paying stipends to young doctors, who often work 16-20 hours a day, was akin to the practice of bonded labor. This statement underscores the severity of the situation and the urgent need for reform.

The issue of unpaid stipends for MBBS interns has been a concern since January 25, 2019, and continues to affect many aspiring medical professionals. The Supreme Court’s involvement indicates the gravity of the matter, as they noted, “We are forced to make this observation as no action seems to have been taken against erring institutions.”

As the NMC continues to implement these changes, the future of medical education and intern compensation in India remains uncertain. Details remain unconfirmed regarding further actions that may be taken to address these ongoing issues.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) was established to oversee medical education and practice in India, replacing the Medical Council of India (MCI) in 2020. Since its inception, the NMC has focused on improving standards in medical education and addressing pressing issues affecting medical students.

Recent Initiatives

In August 2024, the NMC launched the National Medical Register (NMR) to create a centralized database of licensed allopathic doctors in India. However, the initial response has been underwhelming, with only 10,411 applications received in the first eight months, and 98% of these applications not approved.

To enhance mental health support, the NMC has issued a mandatory advisory for medical colleges to report student suicides and maintain accurate records of such incidents. This initiative follows a directive from the Supreme Court of India, which emphasized the need for institutions to address mental health concerns and prevent suicides on campuses.

Current Developments

On April 24, the Supreme Court ordered the NMC to establish a mental health task force, highlighting the urgency of the situation. The NMC has instructed medical colleges to submit monthly Action Taken Reports (ATR) regarding mental health initiatives, indicating a proactive approach to tackling these issues.

Additionally, the NMC is working on the rollout of the National Exit Test (NExT) after consultations with stakeholders. Dr. Abhijat Sheth noted that the technical framework for the NExT has largely been developed, and the next stage will involve wider consultations to ensure smooth implementation.

Future Directions

The NMC has also clarified that online medical education must be complemented with physical onsite training for foreign medical students. This decision aims to maintain educational standards and ensure that all medical graduates are adequately prepared for practice.

Furthermore, the NMC plans to implement mandatory training in basic clinical procedures for undergraduate students, which is expected to enhance their practical skills and readiness for the medical field.

As the NMC continues to navigate staffing gaps and regulatory challenges, its recent initiatives reflect a commitment to improving medical education and student welfare in India. The outcomes of these efforts will be crucial for the future of healthcare in the country.
