By Aditya Rao — 2 July 2026 — 4 min read

Day four of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships saw several top players secure their spots in the last 32. Reigning champion Iga Swiatek, along with Alexander Zverev, Elena Rybakina, and Frances Tiafoe, all advanced after their respective matches on Thursday.

Iga Swiatek, the third seed, moved past Karolina Pliskova with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. This performance followed a challenging first-round match where she defeated Taylor Townsend. Swiatek commented on her improved focus, stating, “For sure the first round was really emotional but today I felt like it’s another day at the office, I need to be ready, be sharp.” The Polish player has maintained a strong record in Grand Slams, reaching at least the third round on each of her past Grand Slam appearances since losing in round two at the 2019 U.S. Open.

Swiatek, who won her sixth Grand Slam title at the All England Club a year ago, is set to face the Philippines’ Alexandra Eala next. Eala, the 29th seed, made history by becoming the first woman from the Philippines to reach the third round of a Grand Slam, defeating Maya Joint 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 on Court Three. Eala, at 21 years old, praised the atmosphere, describing it as “amazing, it was electric, respectful and all that I could have hoped for.”

In other women’s singles action, last year’s runner-up Amanda Anisimova came back from a break down in the third set to defeat Sofia Kenin in a deciding tie-break. Former Australian Open champion Madison Keys ended British interest in the women’s singles by beating Katie Swan in straight sets. Second seed Elena Rybakina also progressed, defeating Caty McNally 6-1, 6-2. Rybakina is bidding to take the world number one ranking from Aryna Sabalenka next week.

Men’s Singles Progress

Alexander Zverev, the second seed, delivered a strong performance against Valentin Royer, winning 6-1, 6-3, 7-6 (7/3). Zverev, who secured his maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open last month, has historically not progressed far at Wimbledon, having never advanced past the last 16 in nine previous attempts. He expressed optimism about his current form, noting, “If I keep playing like this I definitely think it can happen this year.” He also highlighted the importance of a short-term memory in tennis, whether for good or bad results.

Zverev’s path in the tournament appears promising, with Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic in the other half of the draw, and fourth seed Ben Shelton already out of the competition. Zverev’s victory over Royer helped to erase memories of his first-round exit last year against Arthur Rinderknech.

American sixth seed Taylor Fritz continued his strong run at the All England Club, defeating compatriot Patrick Kypson 6-2, 6-2, 7-5 to reach the third round. Fritz has reached at least the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in three of the past four years, having lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals a year ago.

Fifth-seeded Australian Alex de Minaur also advanced with a straight-sets victory over French veteran Adrian Mannarino. Rising Spanish player Rafael Jodar completed a comeback win over Pablo Carreno Busta in a match that was delayed by darkness on Wednesday, winning the last two sets. Jodar, a Wimbledon debutant, had never played a Tour-level match on grass before this week but reached the French Open quarter-finals this year.

Other Notable Matches

Frances Tiafoe, the 17th seed, rallied after losing the first set to defeat Jan Choinski 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, 6-2. Tiafoe recorded nine aces and 33 unforced errors, while Choinski had 41 unforced errors. Tiafoe also secured five breaks compared to his opponent’s one.

Grigor Dimitrov claimed a victory against the 15th seed Jakub Menšík with a score of 7-6(5), 6-4, 7-5, 6-3. Alexander Bublik, the 10th seed, also moved into the third round by defeating Kyrian Jacquet 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(5). Bublik served 15 aces and made 16 unforced errors, while Jacquet had 25 unforced errors.

Jiří Lehecka, the 13th seed, advanced with an assertive 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 win over Alex Molcan, hitting 25 aces and securing six breaks. Karen Khachanov, the 19th seed, defeated Yannick Hanfmann 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Flavio Cobolli, the ninth seed, won against James Duckworth 7-6(4), 3-6, 7-6(7), 6-1. Matteo Berrettini defeated Arthur Fils 6-4, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. Arthur Fery kept British hopes alive by beating Otto Virtanen in four sets.

The third round of the Wimbledon Championships is set to continue tomorrow, July 3, 2026, with matches featuring Jannik Sinner, Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, and Coco Gauff.

Krejcikova’s emotional victory

Barbora Krejcikova secured a three-set victory over French Open champion Mirra Andreeva at Wimbledon. The Czech player, a former Wimbledon singles champion in 2024, overcame the fifth seed with a score of 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. The match lasted almost three hours on Centre Court.

Krejcikova dedicated her win to her niece, who was at home with chickenpox. She expressed hope that her performance on what she called “the best court in the world” would make her niece proud and provide motivation for tennis and life. Krejcikova mentioned that she has faced challenges with injuries and personal life events in recent months, making this victory particularly special.

During the deciding set, Krejcikova nearly lost her lead, missing six match points while leading 5-3. However, she regained her focus to close out the match in the subsequent game. Andreeva, on the other hand, displayed visible frustration, throwing her racquet and exclaiming “I quit” towards her team before leaving the court. The Russian teenager later became emotional during a news conference when asked about her performance, stating she would need “a couple days” to recover before returning to practice for hard courts.

Osaka’s distinctive court attire and progress

Naomi Osaka once again captured attention with her choice of attire at Wimbledon. Following her initial appearance in an elegant, all-white kimono, the four-time Grand Slam champion opted for a different look for her return to action. She combined a white jacket featuring a floral pattern with a long train, which was attached to her waist by an obi, a traditional decorative belt.

Naomi Osaka wearing her latest outfit at Wimbledon, featuring a train and traditional obi Credit: bbc.com

Osaka’s unique outfit drew the gaze of spectators and photographers as she made her way from the locker room to Court Two. Shortly after, she advanced to the third round by defeating Anastasia Gasanova with a score of 6-3, 6-2, matching her best performance at Wimbledon. Osaka, who was born in Japan and grew up in Florida, stated that her inspiration for fashion can come from various sources, including the expressive street style observed in Tokyo’s Harajuku district.

Osaka is scheduled to face Daria Kasatkina in the third round. A potential opponent in the fourth round could be world number one Aryna Sabalenka.

Other notable matches and player interactions

Aryna Sabalenka also progressed to the third round, achieving a 6-1, 7-6 (11-9) victory over McCartney Kessler. Following her match, Sabalenka took a moment to interact with a young fan on Court One who had a replica of Sabalenka’s tiger tattoo. Sabalenka, who has previously stated her tattoo represents her aggressive playing style, described the interaction as “adorable.”

Sabalenka’s next match will be an anticipated third-round encounter against former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko. Ostapenko secured her spot by defeating Antonia Ruzic 6-2, 6-0. Meanwhile, on Centre Court, Novak Djokovic defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

Novak Djokovic Credit: bbc.co.uk

Other results from the tournament include Jannik Sinner defeating Nuno Borges with set scores of 7-6, 7-6, 6-4. Coco Gauff advanced after a three-set match against Solana Sierra, winning 6-3, 7-6. Felix Auger-Aliassime also moved forward, beating Dino Prizmic 7-6, 6-3, 7-5. On Court 17, Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic defeated Alexander Bublik and Nick Kyrgios.

Amritraj’s perspective on Serena Williams’ return

Indian tennis icon Vijay Amritraj has shared his insights on Serena Williams’ return to tennis. Amritraj, who reached the quarterfinals of the grass-court major twice in 1973 and 1981, believes that while Williams’ motivation might stem from the joy of playing and wanting her daughters to see her compete, a major win at her age is improbable.

He drew an analogy to Muhammad Ali’s boxing comeback, suggesting that time does not wait for anyone, even a player of Williams’ calibre. Amritraj noted that Williams has achieved more than any other female tennis player in modern history, making her return against younger opponents a significant challenge. He thinks she would be content playing doubles, but winning a major with family commitments is a long shot.

Challenges in women’s tennis and Djokovic’s enduring strength

Amritraj also commented on the competitive landscape of women’s tennis, highlighting that no female player has won Wimbledon consecutively since 2016. He attributes this to the current field having a similar standard in performance and temperament, unlike the men’s game where players like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have distinguished themselves. While Aryna Sabalenka has shown dominance, other players have identified weaknesses in her game, making the women’s draw quite open.

Regarding the men’s competition, Amritraj expressed confidence in Novak Djokovic’s enduring capabilities. Despite younger players becoming Grand Slam winners, Amritraj believes Djokovic’s mental fortitude and temperament set him apart. He noted that Djokovic has consistently been present in the game, adapting to the rise of younger talent. Amritraj considers Djokovic’s ability to recover after demanding five-set matches as his biggest challenge, but still views him as a strong contender.

Djokovic, at 39 years old, arrived at the All England Club to prepare for Wimbledon, aiming for a 25th Grand Slam title. His season has demonstrated his high level of play, including a strong performance at the Australian Open where he defeated Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals. However, his subsequent five months have highlighted the difficulty of maintaining peak physical condition throughout the season.

Novak Djokovic gets into his stride for Wimbledon as he practises with Jannik Sinner on Court No 1.Photograph: Adrian Dennis/AFP/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

Wimbledon is seen as a particularly suitable venue for Djokovic to potentially secure another major title due to the nature of grass courts. The shorter points on grass allow him to leverage his precise serve, net play, and aggressive first-strike tennis, which is less physically demanding. He has won the tournament seven times previously.

Sinner’s title defence and the impact of injuries

With Carlos Alcaraz absent from this year’s tournament due to a right-wrist injury, there is speculation about whether this eases the path for Jannik Sinner to defend his Wimbledon title. Amritraj emphasised that winning seven matches against top-quality opponents is always a challenge, regardless of who is missing. He also pointed out that players need time to adjust to the grass surface, which can lead to upsets in the early stages of the tournament.

Sinner, the defending champion, is looking to bounce back from a tough loss at Roland Garros, where he led by two sets and 5-1 in the third before collapsing. He has been working to understand his physical frailties since that defeat. Djokovic and Sinner are drawn into the same half of the bracket, potentially setting up a semi-final encounter. Other players like Matteo Berrettini, Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, and Alex de Minaur are also expected to contend in the men’s draw.

Amritraj also touched upon concerns regarding the tour’s scheduling, noting that top players, as independent contractors, have the flexibility to manage their schedules. They are committed to playing the nine Masters 1000 tournaments on the ATP Tour and the four Grand Slams, totaling 13 tournaments, and can plan their rest accordingly.

By Aditya Rao — 26 June 2026 — 4 min read

The draw for Wimbledon 2026 has been announced, setting the stage for potential high-profile matchups, particularly in the men’s singles where defending champion Jannik Sinner and seven-time champion Novak Djokovic have been placed in the same half of the draw. This arrangement could lead to a semifinal clash between the two players.

Novak Djokovic, who is pursuing a record eighth Wimbledon title, is scheduled to begin his campaign against Wu Yibing of China. His projected path includes potential encounters with Stefanos Tsitsipas or Hugo Gaston in the second round, followed by Arthur Rinderknech in the third round. Further into the tournament, Djokovic might face either Andrey Rublev or Joao Fonseca in the fourth round, with a projected quarter-final against third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Jannik Sinner, the world number one and reigning champion, will start his title defence against Miomir Kecmanovic. His projected route includes matches against Nuno Borges or Tristan Boyer in the second round, and potentially Ignacio Buse in the third. In the fourth round, Sinner could face Rafael Jodar or fellow Italian Luciano Darderi. Should both Sinner and Djokovic advance, a significant semifinal match is anticipated. Former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev is projected to be Sinner’s quarterfinal opponent, with Medvedev opening his tournament against 2017 finalist Marin Cilic.

Men’s Singles Draw Highlights

In the other half of the men’s draw, French Open champion Alexander Zverev is set to play against Alexander Blockx. Zverev is seeded for a third-round match against Matteo Arnaldi, and a fourth-round encounter with either Jiri Lehecka or Francisco Cerundolo. A potential quarter-final match-up for Zverev is against sixth seed Taylor Fritz. However, Fritz faces a challenging opening round against Britain’s Jack Draper, who is making his return to the ATP Tour at Eastbourne this week. Draper has a strong record against Zverev, including victories at Wimbledon in 2024 and Halle last month.

The men’s singles final is scheduled for Sunday, July 12. Sinner is considered a favourite to win, despite an early exit at the French Open. Djokovic is also a strong contender as he aims for his 25th Grand Slam title. Alexander Zverev is attempting to win back-to-back majors, though he has not advanced past the fourth round at the All England Club previously.

Women’s Singles Draw and Serena Williams’ Return

The women’s singles draw is highlighted by the return of Serena Williams to Grand Slam singles action for the first time since the 2022 US Open. She received a wildcard entry and will open against Maya Jantchene of Australia. A potential third-round meeting between Williams and defending champion Iga Swiatek is projected, with Alexandra Eala being the potential second-round opponent for Williams.

Iga Swiatek begins her title defence against Taylor Townsend. World number one Aryna Sabalenka will start against qualifier Teodora Kostovic, while second seed Elena Rybakina faces Lois Boisson. Fourth seed Jessica Pegula is set to play against Czech qualifier Darja Vidmanova. Other notable matches in the first round include home favourite Emma Raducanu against Antonia Ruzic, Naomi Osaka facing Elsa Jacquemot, Coco Gauff against Tamara Korpatsch, and Mirra Andreeva meeting Magda Linette. The projected women’s quarter-finals include Sabalenka vs Andreeva, Pegula vs Gauff, Swiatek vs Elina Svitolina, and Rybakina vs Amanda Anisimova.

The women’s singles final is scheduled for Saturday, July 11. The women’s singles competition is seen as more open, with Aryna Sabalenka as a slight favourite ahead of 2022 champion Elena Rybakina. French Open champion Mirra Andreeva and defending champion Iga Swiatek are also considered strong contenders.

Tournament Details and Innovations

Wimbledon 2026 commences on Monday, June 29, at the All England Club. The tournament will feature video review technology for the first time, available on Centre Court, No. 1 Court, and four other show courts. This technology allows players to review specific calls made by the chair umpire, such as double bounces, and made its Grand Slam debut at the 2023 US Open.

The singles schedule for the tournament includes:

First Round: Monday, June 29 and Tuesday, June 30

Second Round: Wednesday, July 1 and Thursday, July 2

Third Round: Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4

Fourth Round: Sunday, July 5 and Monday, July 6

Quarterfinals: Tuesday, July 7 and Wednesday, July 8

Women’s Semifinals: Thursday, July 9

Men’s Semifinals: Friday, July 10

Women’s Final: Saturday, July 11

Men’s Final: Sunday, July 12

The singles champions will each receive 3.6 million pounds ($4.8 million), with the total prize money, including player per diems, amounting to 64.2 million pounds ($85 million). These figures represent a 20% increase over 2025.

Last year’s Wimbledon attendance reached a record 548,770. The tournament spans 14 days, unlike other Grand Slams which feature main-draw action over 15 days. Wimbledon is also unique among Grand Slams for holding its qualifying rounds at a separate location, a situation that may be addressed in the club’s expansion plans, which include a new 8,000-seat stadium and additional courts.

Who is involved

As the tennis world gears up for the semifinals of the Charleston Open on April 4, 2026, the spotlight is on two players: Yuliia Starodubtseva and Madison Keys. Starodubtseva, currently ranked No. 89 in the world, is making her debut at this prestigious tournament. In contrast, Madison Keys, with a world ranking of No. 18, is a seasoned player with a wealth of experience in high-stakes matches. This matchup is particularly intriguing as it marks the first head-to-head meeting between the two athletes.

Before this development, expectations were largely in favor of Keys, given her higher ranking and experience on the WTA tour. Keys has been a formidable competitor, known for her powerful serve and aggressive playing style. Her recent performance against Belinda Bencic, where she won 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, showcased her resilience and ability to come back from a set down. On the other hand, Starodubtseva’s journey to the semifinals has been marked by determination, highlighted by her victory over McCartney Kessler with a score of 6-4, 6-4.

The decisive moment came when both players secured their spots in the semifinals, setting the stage for a clash that could redefine their careers. Starodubtseva’s advancement to this stage is particularly significant as it represents her maiden WTA semifinal, a milestone that could propel her into the spotlight. The Charleston Open, with a prize purse of $2.3 million, offers a lucrative opportunity for both players, making this match even more critical.

The direct effects of this matchup extend beyond the players themselves. For Starodubtseva, a win against a higher-ranked opponent like Keys could serve as a major confidence boost and a turning point in her career. Conversely, for Keys, a victory would reinforce her status as a top contender in women’s tennis and could help her regain momentum in the tournament after a challenging start to the season.

Expert voices in the tennis community have noted the significance of this match. Analysts suggest that Starodubtseva’s recent form and her ability to handle pressure could play a crucial role in determining the outcome. Meanwhile, Keys’ experience in high-pressure situations is expected to be an advantage. The contrasting styles of play—Starodubtseva’s tactical approach versus Keys’ aggressive power—will make for an exciting encounter.

As the match approaches, fans and analysts alike are eager to see how this dynamic will unfold on the court. With both players having something to prove, the stakes are high. Starodubtseva’s rise through the ranks and Keys’ quest to maintain her position among the elite players in the sport create a compelling narrative that adds to the anticipation surrounding this semifinal.

Details remain unconfirmed, but the excitement surrounding this match is palpable. As the tennis world watches, both Yuliia Starodubtseva and Madison Keys will look to make their mark in this pivotal moment at the Charleston Open.
