A house belonging to the late J. Jayalalithaa has been sealed by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) due to unpaid property tax dues amounting to ₹82.91 lakh. These dues have been accumulating since 2017, when the property tax first became due.

The total property tax dues initially reached ₹1.6 crore before waivers were applied. Following the waivers, the amount payable was reduced to approximately ₹83 lakh. The property, categorized as ‘Commercial’, has been rented by businessman Vijay Mallya, yet it remains registered under Jayalalithaa’s name in GHMC records.

In May 2020, the Madras High Court declared Jayalalithaa’s nephew and niece as her legal heirs, as she passed away without a will. Despite this legal recognition, the heirs have not made any payments towards the outstanding property tax dues, prompting the GHMC to issue a ‘Red Notice’ for non-payment.

The outstanding dues currently stand at ₹82.91 lakh after rebates were applied under the One-Time Settlement scheme, which offers a significant 90% waiver on accumulated interest for property tax arrears. However, no payments have been made despite repeated efforts by the GHMC to recover the dues.

The property will remain under the custody of the GHMC until the outstanding dues are cleared, highlighting the ongoing challenges related to property tax compliance in Hyderabad. Observers note that the situation underscores the complexities of property ownership and tax obligations, particularly in cases involving deceased individuals.

As the situation develops, it remains to be seen whether the legal heirs will take action to settle the outstanding property tax dues or if further legal proceedings will ensue. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any potential plans from the heirs to address the tax liabilities.

On March 26, 2026, a significant shift occurred in the ownership of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), a prominent franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Just before this key development, Vijay Mallya, the former owner of RCB, had been facing challenges related to his investment in the team, which he initially purchased in 2008 for INR 450 crore.

The sale was finalized when Mallya sold RCB for a staggering INR 16,660 crore to a consortium led by the Aditya Birla Group. This transaction marks the largest deal in IPL history, reflecting the growing financial clout of cricket franchises in India.

The consortium acquiring RCB includes notable entities such as The Times of India Group, Bolt Ventures, and Blackstone, indicating a robust backing for the franchise’s future. The sale was an all-cash transaction, with United Spirits Limited selling 100 percent equity in Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited (RCSPL).

As the deal was announced, Mallya expressed his sentiments, stating, “RCB will always remain a part of my DNA,” while also congratulating the new owners, saying, “I would like to heartily congratulate the new owners of RCB.” This reflects a sense of pride and nostalgia for Mallya, who had been a significant figure in the franchise’s journey.

However, the sale was pending regulatory approvals from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Competition Commission of India, which are standard procedures in such high-profile transactions. The outcome of these approvals will determine the finalization of the ownership transfer.

The implications of this sale are profound for all parties involved. For the Aditya Birla Group and its consortium partners, this acquisition represents a strategic investment in one of the most popular cricket franchises in India. For Mallya, it signifies a departure from a venture that had once been a source of pride but has also been marred by controversy.

As the cricketing landscape evolves, the ownership of franchises like RCB continues to attract significant attention, not just from fans but also from investors looking to capitalize on the sport’s immense popularity.

In summary, the sale of RCB to the Aditya Birla Group consortium is a landmark event in IPL history, underscoring the financial dynamics of sports ownership in India. The next steps hinge on regulatory approvals, which will pave the way for a new chapter in RCB’s story.

In a significant development for cricket fans, Amrit Thomas has officially taken over as the chairman of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as of March 28, 2026. This change comes in the wake of a historic acquisition involving major stakeholders, including the Aditya Birla Group, The Times of India Group, Bolt Ventures, and Blackstone, who collectively purchased the franchise for a staggering $1.78 billion.

The acquisition values RCB at approximately INR 166.6 billion, a remarkable increase from the INR 450 crores that former owner Vijay Mallya paid for the franchise in 2008. This transition marks a new chapter for RCB, especially after the team won its first IPL trophy in 2025 and is now the defending champion for the 2026 season.

Vijay Mallya, who was the face of RCB for many years, expressed bittersweet sentiments regarding the sale. “When I bought the franchise in 2008 for INR 450 crores, most people laughed at me and criticized my investment as a vanity project,” he stated. His vision for the team has now culminated in a record-breaking sale, highlighting the franchise’s growth and potential.

As RCB prepares for the IPL 2026 season opener at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, the atmosphere is charged with excitement. Mallya remarked, “The Day has arrived for our Lions of Bengaluru…namma sinhagulu…IPL Champions. Good Luck and Play Bold…Dhairyadinda ațavadi,” reflecting his pride in the team’s achievements.

Rajat Patidar leads the team as captain, and the franchise’s recent success has generated optimism among fans and stakeholders alike. The acquisition signifies not only a change in ownership but also a renewed commitment to elevating RCB’s status in the Indian Premier League.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the future direction of the franchise under Thomas’s leadership, but the initial reactions from the cricket community have been largely positive. Observers note that the new ownership group brings a wealth of experience and resources that could further enhance RCB’s competitive edge.

As the IPL 2026 season unfolds, all eyes will be on RCB to see how this new era under Amrit Thomas shapes the team’s future. The franchise’s journey from Mallya’s controversial ownership to a multi-billion-dollar acquisition is a testament to the evolving landscape of cricket in India.

With the season opener just around the corner, the anticipation is palpable, and fans are eager to see how RCB will perform as the defending champions. The franchise’s rich history and recent successes set the stage for what promises to be an exciting season ahead.

“Most people laughed at my investment,” remarked Vijay Mallya, reflecting on the journey of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) since its inception. This statement resonates deeply as RCB prepares to kick off its IPL 2026 campaign on March 28, 2026, against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the iconic Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

The match is set to start at 7:30 PM IST, marking a significant moment for the franchise that has seen its valuation soar to $1.78 billion, a staggering increase of over 1,400 percent since Mallya purchased the team in 2008 for ₹450 crore.

RCB’s journey has been marked by ups and downs, with the team finally clinching its first IPL title in 2025, a moment that fans had long awaited. Mallya, who has been a pivotal figure in RCB’s history, stated, “RCB is part of my DNA,” highlighting his deep connection to the team.

The upcoming season promises to be thrilling, with RCB’s last match scheduled for May 22, 2026, against the same opponents, Sunrisers Hyderabad. This season will also feature a match against Delhi Capitals on April 18, 2026, starting at 3:30 PM IST.

As the IPL continues to grow in global stature and investor confidence, RCB’s recent sale, which includes both the men’s IPL team and the women’s WPL team, underscores the franchise’s increasing appeal. The sale price, equivalent to ₹16,600 crore, reflects the rising interest in cricket as a lucrative investment.

RCB’s history is intertwined with cricketing legends, including the early signing of Virat Kohli, who has become synonymous with the franchise. The anticipation surrounding the upcoming season is palpable, as fans hope for another successful run following their recent triumph.

With the tournament set to begin, RCB’s management is focused on building a competitive team that can replicate last year’s success. The franchise’s strategic investments and player acquisitions will be closely watched as the season unfolds.

As the countdown to the IPL 2026 begins, RCB fans are eager to see how the team will perform in this highly competitive league. The excitement is building, and all eyes will be on Bengaluru as the matches commence.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding any additional changes to the squad or management ahead of the season, but the franchise’s commitment to excellence remains clear.
