India has returned to the top position in the ICC Men’s T20I Team rankings following their series against Zimbabwe in Harare. The team secured an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, leading to their ascent in the rankings. This achievement sees the current ICC Men’s T20 World Cup champions reclaim the top spot, which was previously held by England after their 4-0 T20I series win at home.
The Indian batters played a significant role in the second T20I against Zimbabwe, building on a dominant victory in the first match, which was largely driven by the bowlers and a record-setting performance by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. In the second T20I, after losing two early wickets, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer formed a 66-run partnership. Following this, Tilak Varma contributed a notable knock, scoring 60 runs off 29 balls.
Kishan, who was the highest scorer in that game with 81 runs off 44 balls, commented on the team’s approach. He noted that as a batter at number three, his role was to focus on the ball and play naturally, while also understanding the wicket conditions. Kishan mentioned discussions within the team about target scores, ranging from 170-180 to potentially 230 or 250 runs. He highlighted the importance of his partnership with Shreyas Iyer in building the innings and executing their plans effectively.
Zimbabwe, chasing a target of 220 runs, lost five wickets within the first nine overs and were eventually bowled out for 129. This performance secured India’s unassailable lead in the T20I series. The two teams were scheduled to play again on July 26, Sunday.
Sooryavanshi’s Record-Breaking Feat
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continued to make history, becoming the first player in men’s international cricket to achieve multiple scores of 50 or more before turning 16. The 15-year-old left-handed opener accomplished this milestone during the third and final T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare on Sunday. He scored 81 runs off 48 balls, helping India reach a total of 192/5 after they chose to bat first.
Prior to Sooryavanshi, only Nepal’s Kushal Malla had recorded a 50-plus score in men’s internationals before reaching the age of 16. Sooryavanshi’s two such scores now place him uniquely in this regard. His innings in the third T20I demonstrated a different facet of his batting on a pitch that offered assistance to the bowlers.
He started cautiously, accumulating 11 runs from his initial 10 balls and 26 runs from his first 20 deliveries. He then reached his second T20I fifty in 31 balls. Despite the cautious start, his innings featured his characteristic strokeplay. He hit Brad Evans for a four straight down the ground from a yorker and later launched off-spinner Sikandar Raza for a 102-meter six. He also executed a reverse-sweep for a boundary off Wesley Madhevere.
Partnerships and Middle-Order Contributions
While Sooryavanshi settled into his innings, his opening partner Abhishek Sharma’s period of low scores continued. Abhishek was dismissed for two runs, edging Blessing Muzarabani to wicketkeeper Tadi Marumani. His recent six innings have yielded scores of 10, 16, 3, 1, 8, and 2, dating back to the third T20I against England in Nottingham last month.
Sooryavanshi then forged a 75-run partnership for the second wicket with Ishan Kishan, who contributed 29 runs. Following this, he shared a 50-run partnership with captain Shreyas Iyer, who scored 27. Sooryavanshi appeared to be heading towards a century before he was dismissed by Wesley Madhevere, with Brad Evans completing the catch at long-off, ending his innings at 81 runs.
After the departures of Sooryavanshi and Shreyas, India’s scoring rate slowed. The middle order added 47 runs in the final five overs. Rinku Singh’s contribution of 25 runs off 14 balls helped India approach the 200-run mark, ultimately finishing with 192/5. This total was considered competitive on a surface that provided assistance to the bowlers.
