International Stars Join SA20 Season 5 Line-up
The upcoming SA20 Season 5, scheduled to commence on January 17 next year, is set to feature several prominent international players. Franchises have announced their retained and pre-signed players, with the remaining squad positions to be filled during the Player Auction on October 7. This season will mark the debut of Australian T20I captain Mitchell Marsh, who will represent the Sunrisers Eastern Cape, three-time champions in the league.
Marsh, an all-rounder who has played 88 T20Is, is expected to participate in the season opener at St George’s Park in Gqeberha. He will be joined at Sunrisers Eastern Cape by South African wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock. The opening match will see Sunrisers Eastern Cape face the Pretoria Capitals, with Marsh’s compatriot Matthew Short also expected to be part of the opposing team.
Another notable returnee is explosive England opener Phil Salt, who is rejoining the Pretoria Capitals after his involvement in the first two seasons. Salt has shown significant improvement in his batting, moving up to No 4 in the ICC T20I batting rankings. He will reunite with Matthew Short at the top of the order, enhancing the Capitals’ batting strength. The Capitals also see the return of Sherfane Rutherford, a power-hitter from Season 4, who will play alongside Dewald Brevis and Lungi Ngidi, the recently named Proteas T20I Player of the Year.
The SA20 League Commissioner, Graeme Smith, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming season, stating that Season 5 is “shaping up to be our strongest yet.” He highlighted the addition of players like Mitchell Marsh, Joe Root, Sam Curran, and Phil Salt as evidence of the league’s growing appeal on the global stage. Smith also noted that the quality of these international stars will complement South Africa’s top international and domestic talent.
Squad Finalisations and Key Player Movements
While most teams have retained their core players and South Africa’s top talent, Durban’s Super Giants and Paarl Royals have already completed their full 19-player squad rosters ahead of the auction. This leaves 19 available slots across the remaining four teams for the auction.
England all-rounder Sam Curran, who previously played for MI Cape Town in the first two seasons, will now feature for Durban’s Super Giants. He is expected to lead the attack at Kingsmead and will join Proteas captain Aiden Markram, former England captain Jos Buttler, West Indies spinner Sunil Narine, and batter Heinrich Klaasen. Joe Root, England’s Test captain, is also making a return for a second spell with the Paarl Royals. He will play alongside Ottneil Baartman, the 2025 Bowler of the Season, and Proteas players David Miller and Lhuan-dre Pretorius.
Another English all-rounder, Will Jacks, has been pre-signed by MI Cape Town. Jacks had a strong performance for Pretoria Capitals in the first three seasons, and fans at Newlands will be anticipating a continuation of his form. MI Cape Town, along with the Joburg Super Kings, will be among the busiest teams at the auction, needing to sign six and seven players respectively. The Pretoria Capitals have five vacant slots to fill.
The Joburg Super Kings are currently seeking a new captain after the departure of Faf du Plessis, who led the side for its first four seasons. Jason Holder, the MLC-winning captain, will be joining the Joburg Super Kings. Other prominent players released include England wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow, who previously formed an opening partnership with Quinton de Kock for the Sunrisers. MI Cape Town has also parted ways with players such as Trent Boult, Rassie van der Dussen, and Kieron Pollard.
Tournament Schedule and Key Dates
The SA20 Season 5 will kick off on January 17 at St George’s Park, featuring a match between the Sunrisers and the Capitals, a repeat of last season’s final. The tournament’s knockout stages include Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2 on February 16 and February 19, respectively. The Eliminator is scheduled for February 17.
The grand finale of the competition, the summit clash, is set to take place on February 21 at Newlands.
