France manager Didier Deschamps anticipates a “spectacular” semi-final clash as his team prepares to face Spain in a significant World Cup 2026 encounter in Dallas on Tuesday. This match will determine which of the two European football powerhouses advances to Sunday’s final.
Spain previously defeated France in the semi-finals of Euro 2024, where they were crowned European champions, and also in a high-scoring Nations League last-four match last year. Deschamps, who is set to step down after 14 years in charge at the end of the tournament, stated that past results are not a focus. He expressed his team’s ambition to reach the final, noting that France is now at a different level.
Anticipation for the Semi-Final
Deschamps, who captained France to a world title in 1998 and managed them to World Cup victory in 2018, believes Spain will begin the semi-final as favourites. He highlighted Spain’s defensive record, having conceded only one goal in six games during the tournament. Despite this, he expects a spectacular game, acknowledging the offensive quality of both teams.
Spain’s manager, Luis de la Fuente, downplayed the favourite tag, stating it holds no significance. He emphasised that both are great national teams and that the pressure to perform well for their country is always present, regardless of being labelled favourites. De la Fuente referenced Roman general Julius Caesar, stating that one cannot achieve victory without suffering, a sentiment he agrees with.
France aims to become only the third nation to reach three consecutive World Cup finals if they secure a win in Texas. West Germany (1982, 1986, 1990) and Brazil (1994, 1998, 2002) are the only other countries to have achieved this feat.
Key Players to Watch
The semi-final will feature several prominent players from both sides. France’s captain, Kylian Mbappe, has been in exceptional form, scoring eight goals and providing three assists in six games at this World Cup. He is currently competing for the Golden Boot and could surpass Lionel Messi’s goal tally if he scores against Spain.

Another key player for France is Michael Olise, who, despite not scoring, leads the tournament with five assists. His partnership with Mbappe has been a notable aspect of France’s campaign. Ousmane Dembele has also been a significant contributor, scoring five goals in the tournament, including a hat-trick in a group stage match against Norway.
For Spain, Lamine Yamal, an 18-year-old, is considered a vital attacking threat. Although he has one goal in the tournament, he scored against France in the Euro 2024 semi-finals and was named player of the match in Spain’s quarter-final victory over Belgium. France’s Adrien Rabiot stated that his team is focused on the Spanish team as a whole rather than a specific plan for Yamal.

Mikel Oyarzabal is Spain’s leading scorer in the World Cup with four goals, having also scored six during qualification. He has a history of scoring crucial goals, including an 86th-minute winner against England in the Euro 2024 final. Mikel Merino, an Arsenal midfielder, has also proven to be an impactful substitute, scoring late winners against Portugal and Belgium.
De la Fuente acknowledged France’s strong players, including Mbappe, Dembele, and Olise, and stressed the need for his team to win individual battles and maintain their style of play in what he expects to be an extremely demanding match. The winner of this semi-final will face either Argentina or England in the World Cup final.
