Chelsea secures Morgan Rogers
Chelsea has officially announced the signing of England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The 23-year-old forward has agreed to a contract at Stamford Bridge that extends until 2033. Rogers will join Xabi Alonso’s squad in preparation for the upcoming 2026/27 season.
Rogers expressed his excitement, stating that Chelsea is the largest club in London and one he has admired since childhood. He also noted his enthusiasm for the project under the new manager, the current players, and the club’s future direction.
The transfer fee for Rogers is reported to be £117 million, marking a record for a British player and becoming the club’s highest-ever deal. This move concludes a pursuit that has spanned over two years for Chelsea to bring Rogers to Stamford Bridge.

Negotiations and Player Impact
The agreement for Rogers’ transfer was reached swiftly, reportedly within 48 hours. Formal negotiations between Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Rogers’ representatives began on a Thursday, following England’s semi-final defeat against Argentina. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso then contacted Rogers to discuss his plans, and personal terms were agreed upon the same day. The final stages of negotiations were completed on a Saturday.
Several key figures within Chelsea were involved in securing the deal, including owners and sporting directors Paul Winstanley, Laurence Stewart, Joe Shields, and Sam Jewell. Club captain Reece James also spoke with Rogers while they were in the England camp, and close friend Cole Palmer reached out via text message. This collective effort was seen as a strong indication to Rogers of Chelsea’s serious interest in his signature.
Rogers arrives at Chelsea having established himself as a prominent young attacking talent in the Premier League. During his tenure at Aston Villa, his contributions included 14 goals and 11 assists in his last season, playing a role in 40 goals across 85 Premier League appearances. He also helped the Midlands club achieve a top-four finish and lift the UEFA Europa League trophy last season.

Since his senior debut for England in November 2024, Rogers has become a regular for the national team, earning 22 caps and representing his country at the recent FIFA World Cup. His versatility, including the ability to play on the left, right, as a ‘No 10’, ‘false nine’, and deeper in midfield, was a key factor in Chelsea’s interest. His physicality, size, and attitude are also valued, with the club seeing him as a humble player who can integrate well into the dressing room.
Competition and Future Outlook
Chelsea faced competition from other major clubs in England and abroad for Rogers’ signature. For several weeks, Arsenal appeared to be the frontrunner, with England teammates Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice attempting to persuade him to join. Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard and manager Mikel Arteta also reportedly spoke directly with Rogers. However, Chelsea’s persistent pursuit ultimately secured the transfer.
Aston Villa, despite not wanting to sell Rogers, acknowledged the necessity of offloading key assets to comply with UEFA financial regulations and reshape their squad. They had anticipated Rogers’ departure once England exited the World Cup and had already secured a replacement in Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for a club-record fee. Villa plans to use the funds from Rogers’ sale to acquire a fast winger, with West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville and Paris Saint-Germain’s Ibrahim Mbaye among their targets.
Rogers’ move to Chelsea makes him the fourth signing of the summer for the Blues as they continue to overhaul their squad. This follows the arrivals of defender Marco Palestra, striker Emmanuel Emegha, and winger Geovany Quenda. Rogers’ contract at Stamford Bridge is set to run until 2033.
