Following his performance in the second One Day International (ODI) against England in Cardiff, questions have arisen regarding Rohit Sharma’s automatic selection status for the Indian cricket team. After scoring 26 runs off 47 balls, it is understood that the selection committee has decided he will not be the primary opener after the current series concludes with the third ODI at Lord’s on Sunday. This upcoming match could potentially be the 39-year-old’s final appearance for India.
During the Cardiff match, India was bowled out for 233. Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer contributed with scores of 65 and 66 respectively, as English pacers exploited the Indian batting lineup’s difficulties with bouncing deliveries. Reports indicate that the team management and selectors are keen to provide opportunities to younger players, such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, to prepare for the ODI World Cup scheduled for October-November 2027 in South Africa. It was previously reported that Rohit’s full run in the series was contingent on his form.
Shifting Dynamics in Team Selection
The team management and selectors reportedly intended to give Jaiswal a full series in England but opted to retain Rohit to allow him another chance to regain his form. Sources suggest that the selection committee and team management have communicated their views regarding Rohit to the Indian cricket board (BCCI). It remains to be seen how the board’s power centres will address this situation, either by speaking with Rohit directly or through the selectors.
A BCCI source indicated that selectors had considered dropping Rohit after the home ODI series against Afghanistan last month. Rohit reportedly declined to rest for the third ODI in Chennai, which would have allowed Jaiswal to play. Consequently, captain Shubman Gill had to bat at number three to accommodate Jaiswal in that match.
The team management has expressed dissatisfaction with Rohit’s performances since Gill took over as ODI captain after the successful Champions Trophy campaign in March 2025. Prior to the selection for the Afghanistan series, the BCCI was reportedly informed about concerns from selectors and team management regarding Rohit’s fitness and their doubts about his ability to continue until the World Cup, when he would be over 40 years of age.
Since the Champions Trophy, Rohit’s batting approach has reportedly become more cautious. The management believes he needs three games to find his rhythm in a series. A source mentioned that it has been challenging for Rohit since he retired from the other two formats of the game and plays very little domestic cricket, having participated in only two Vijay Hazare Trophy matches last season, one of which was against Sikkim. The selectors have conveyed their opinion, and the decision on how to proceed now rests with Rohit and the board.
Pressure and Performance
In Cardiff, Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a scratchy 26 runs off 47 balls, attempting a sweep shot against Will Jacks. This followed a score of 11 runs off 21 balls in the first ODI against England, where he appeared frustrated after mis-timing a shot against Sam Curran. These performances have intensified the pressure on Rohit, especially with Virat Kohli batting fluently.
The pressure on Rohit has been evident since his removal as captain after the Champions Trophy triumph. His cautious approach early in his innings, a departure from his previously aggressive style, suggests he may feel his place is in jeopardy with each failure. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar have maintained a non-committal stance regarding his future, adding to the uncertainty.

Between 2023 and the 2025 Champions Trophy, Rohit was known for his aggressive batting. However, since being removed as captain, his average and strike rate in the powerplay phase have reportedly decreased. Although captain Shubman Gill and Agarkar have publicly supported him, Rohit’s on-field demeanour has suggested a struggle, displaying frustration during the Afghanistan series and helplessness after his dismissal in the first ODI against England.
This situation has drawn comparisons to the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, where Rohit’s Test career concluded after he reportedly dropped himself from the final match following a series of poor scores. With the ODI World Cup approximately 15 months away, the selectors, known for their decisive actions with both white-ball teams, may soon make a call on his position. While he might achieve a significant score in the final match at Lord’s, as he did in the last ODI against Afghanistan, the selectors are reportedly looking for consistent aggressive batting from the first match of a series, which has not been consistently observed for several months. The growing murmurs suggest that a decision regarding the 39-year-old’s future could be made in the coming days.
