India-Afghanistan T20I Series to Feature Advanced Production
The upcoming three-match India–Afghanistan T20I series is set to incorporate advanced production technology, similar to that used in the FIFA World Cup 2026. ITW Universe, the rights holder for the series, has indicated that the production standards will be elevated through techniques previously employed in the recent FIFA World Cup. This marks a notable development in cricket, as a bilateral series has not previously been produced to such high standards.
The production team for the India–Afghanistan series will include professionals who have directed the FIFA World Cup final and several UEFA Champions League finals. Jamie Oakford, who has directed every FIFA World Cup since 2002, including the 2014 Final, will lead this project. Bhairav Shanth, founder of ITW Universe, stated that their philosophy is to provide viewers with an optimal viewing experience.
The series will utilise various advanced technologies, including AI-stabilised POV cameras, volumetric free-viewpoint technology, an advanced Spidercam, ultra-motion capabilities, and cine-style storytelling. Quidich Innovation Labs’ Spatio system will also be deployed for broadcast-grade augmented reality, which will be overlaid on a stabilised drone feed with real-time optical player tracking. This technology aims to enable unique field-placement graphics, strategy visualisation, and diverse storytelling angles to highlight Indian cricket production.
Enhanced replay capabilities will be a feature of the broadcast, with a dedicated ultra-slow-motion camera system (Emperor-style or Phantom class) capturing details such as deliveries, bat contact, edges, stumpings, and fielding at 600 frames per second and above. This system is designed to produce high-quality replays. Additionally, the volumetric Free Viewpoint technology will employ a network of cameras to create a real-time 3D digital representation of the entire pitch and every player.
Commercial Opportunities and Festive Season Engagement
The India–Afghanistan T20I series is positioned to offer brands and media planners an opportunity to engage with cricket audiences ahead of India’s festive season. Scheduled to begin in September, the series will see Afghanistan host India, the reigning T20 World Champions. Despite being played in India, India will be the designated away team, creating a unique commercial proposition.
This series is strategically placed at the start of the festive advertising cycle, a period when brands typically aim to increase visibility and consumer engagement. With an anticipated combined reach of approximately 100 million viewers across linear television and OTT platforms, the series is expected to attract a broad audience across various consumer demographics.
From a media and marketing perspective, the series offers a range of commercial opportunities. As an Afghanistan-hosted series, brands can explore on-ground sponsorships and broadcast integrations that might otherwise be restricted during India’s home cricket calendar due to existing sponsorship commitments and category exclusivities. This arrangement allows marketers and brands to consider bespoke activations and customised integrations.
Furthermore, the execution of this series is facilitated through a single-window touchpoint for all activations, campaigns, and media integrations, aiming to make campaign planning more agile and efficient. Bhairav Shanth, Co-Founder of ITW Universe, noted that valuable opportunities for brands often arise when they can engage with consumers before the market becomes saturated. He added that this series provides marketers with a strong moment to connect with consumers as the festive season approaches, encouraging them to think beyond conventional advertising.
Cricket has historically served as an important platform for brands seeking to build momentum before the festive season, when advertising and consumer activity typically increase. The India–Afghanistan series offers an early chance for brands to initiate engagement with consumers, utilising a high-engagement sporting event to build awareness and visibility before the peak of the festive period. The matches are scheduled to be held in New Delhi on September 13, 15, and 17 at Arun Jaitley Stadium.
