As the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 approaches, Indian forwards Mandeep Singh, Abhishek, and Shilanand Lakra have underscored the significance of teamwork, consistency, chemistry, and mental readiness. The tournament, co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands, is scheduled from August 15 to 30. The Indian men’s hockey team will commence its campaign in Pool D against Wales on August 15, followed by matches against England and Pakistan.

The Indian women’s hockey team has also begun its journey for the FIH Hockey World Cup Belgium and Netherlands 2026. The team departed for Europe early Wednesday morning, traveling from Bengaluru to Mumbai before flying to Frankfurt, Germany. In Frankfurt, the team will undergo its final preparation phase, including two practice matches against Germany on July 31 and August 1.

Men’s Team Focus on Preparation and Mentorship

Mandeep Singh, a seasoned striker preparing for his fourth World Cup appearance, has embraced a mentoring role for younger forwards. He shared that he learned extensively from senior players earlier in his career and now aims to impart that knowledge. His guidance includes advice on managing pressure, maintaining composure, and making critical decisions during significant matches.

Singh detailed the specific training sessions for forwards, which involve extensive work within the final nine yards of the field. The focus is on developing strong connections and ensuring every attack yields a positive outcome. He emphasised the importance of receiving the final pass and converting scoring opportunities.

Singh highlighted that effective striking goes beyond just scoring goals, stressing that hockey is a team sport. He believes that a strong understanding and connection with teammates enhance overall effectiveness. The objective upon entering the circle is to create an outcome, whether it is a goal, a shot on target, or earning a penalty corner.

Shilanand Lakra, who is set to make his debut in the FIH World Cup, acknowledged the support from senior players, particularly Mandeep Singh. He noted that senior players provide constructive feedback on areas for improvement, with Singh consistently offering motivation and guidance. These interactions are crucial for his continuous learning and development.

Lakra also pointed out that the role of a modern forward extends beyond just scoring. He focuses on contributing to the team in various ways, such as creating opportunities, scoring, or making tackles. He views forwards as the first line of defence, asserting that strong defensive play from the front eases the pressure on defenders and midfielders.

Abhishek, recognized for his consistent goal-scoring, believes that sustained success stems from diligent work off the ball. He explained that off-the-ball movement and pressing are vital, as the striker initiates the defensive effort. After winning possession, the next steps involve building connections with other forwards and then completing the move, either by scoring, taking a shot on target, or securing a penalty corner.

Abhishek also underscored the importance of mental preparation for high-pressure situations. He stated that composure in the circle is a result of rigorous training, and consistent hard work during practice is essential for making sound decisions in critical moments. The team also incorporates meditation and draws on experience to strengthen their mental game, noting that increased match experience leads to greater calmness during scoring opportunities.

Women’s Team Embarks on European Preparations

The Indian women’s hockey team‘s journey to the FIH Hockey World Cup includes a stop in Frankfurt, Germany. Following their practice matches against Germany, the team will travel to Amsterdam on August 2 to continue their preparations in the Netherlands.

The Indian women’s team will begin its World Cup campaign against China on August 16. Subsequent matches in Pool D will be against South Africa and England. Captain Salima Tete expressed confidence in the team’s readiness before their departure, stating that the squad is eager for the challenge ahead.

Tete mentioned that the team had a productive training block and aims to carry that momentum into the practice matches and then into the World Cup. She highlighted the opening game against China as an important test and emphasized the team’s desire for a positive start to the tournament. The team is determined to perform at its best and make the country proud.

The team is keen to start the tournament well, following months of preparation and upcoming valuable training in Germany, including the two practice matches against the hosts. The FIH Hockey World Cup Belgium and Netherlands 2026 is scheduled from August 15 to 30.
