Murali Sreeshankar secured a silver medal in the men’s long jump at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, achieving a best leap of 8.09m in a closely contested final. This achievement marks him as the first Indian long jump athlete to earn two medals at the Commonwealth Games.
The Indian athlete initially led the competition after the first three rounds. However, Tajay Gayle of Jamaica, a former world champion, ultimately claimed the gold medal with a jump of 8.15m in the fourth round. Scotland’s Stephen Mackenzie secured the bronze medal with a best jump of 8.08m, just one centimetre behind Sreeshankar’s mark.
Early Lead and Gayle’s Decisive Jump
Sreeshankar began the final strongly, opening with an impressive jump of 8.09m. This performance positioned him at the top of the standings through the initial three rounds. Stephen Mackenzie of Scotland remained a close contender with his jump of 8.08m. Tajay Gayle was in third place on countback, despite matching Mackenzie’s distance.
Another Indian competitor, Lokesh Sathyanathan, was also in contention, recording a jump of 7.97m and holding fourth place midway through the event. The competition saw a significant shift in the fourth round when Gayle executed a powerful leap of 8.15m, taking over the lead.
Sreeshankar attempted to reclaim the lead with a jump that appeared substantial, but it was ruled a foul by a narrow margin. His father and coach, Murali, later suggested that the fouled jump would have comfortably exceeded 8.20m, indicating how close Sreeshankar was to regaining the top position.
Final Rounds and Historic Achievement
As the competition progressed into the sixth and final round, Sreeshankar still had an opportunity to surpass Gayle. Before Sreeshankar’s final attempt, Mackenzie recorded 8.06m, leaving his best mark at 8.08m and securing the bronze medal.
Sreeshankar’s final effort measured 7.97m, meaning his initial jump of 8.09m remained his best for the competition. Gayle, having already secured the gold, did not improve on his final attempt but comfortably maintained his leading position.
This silver medal adds to Sreeshankar’s previous achievement of a silver medal in Birmingham in 2022, making him the first Indian long jumper to win two medals at the Commonwealth Games. Before his achievements, India’s previous medallists in the event included Suresh Babu (men’s bronze, 1978), Anju Bobby George (women’s bronze, 2002), and M Prajusha (women’s silver, 2010).
Comeback from Injury and Fellow Indian Performance
The medal is particularly significant for Sreeshankar, who has made a remarkable comeback from a severe knee injury. In April 2024, he suffered a ruptured patellar tendon, which required surgery and caused him to miss what was anticipated to be his first Olympic appearance in Paris. The injury had raised concerns about his ability to return to his previous performance levels.
Despite these challenges, Sreeshankar has shown strong form this year, consistently achieving jumps above the 8m mark. He recorded a season’s best of 8.38m at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar. This marks his second Commonwealth Games appearance, having missed the 2018 edition.
Lokesh Sathyanathan, the other Indian finalist, made an encouraging debut at the Commonwealth Games, finishing in fifth place. His best jump of 7.97m was achieved in his opening attempt, and he was unable to improve upon it in his subsequent attempts.
