Fleming to Lead England Test Side
Stephen Fleming, the former New Zealand captain, is anticipated to be named as England’s Test coach. This appointment follows a series of interviews conducted by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) over the past two weeks. Fleming, aged 53, is expected to succeed Brendon McCullum, who was dismissed earlier this month from the Test coaching role.
McCullum will continue to oversee England’s white-ball teams. The decision to remove McCullum from the Test coaching position came after a period of reflection by the ECB hierarchy, following a 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia and a 2-1 home series loss to New Zealand. This period also saw Ben Stokes announce his retirement from international cricket during the third Test against New Zealand.
Fleming’s relationship with McCullum, who is a compatriot, former teammate, and friend, is seen as an advantage. The two have also been business associates in the past, working together on the software company CricHQ and the export business Quality New Zealand. Daniel Vettori, another former New Zealand captain, described them as “very good friends” with “a lot of similar traits.”
Coaching Experience and Background
While Fleming has not previously served as head coach for a national team, he has extensive experience in franchise cricket since retiring as a player in 2009. He notably held a 17-year tenure as head coach of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
During his time with CSK, Fleming led the team to five IPL titles from nine finals and secured two Champions League T20 crowns. He also took charge of sister teams, the Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket and the Joburg Super Kings in SA20. Additionally, he spent two seasons coaching Southern Brave in The Hundred, reaching the final in 2024.
Fleming’s connection to English cricket also stems from his playing days, which included spells with Middlesex, Yorkshire, and Nottinghamshire, where he captained them to the County Championship title in 2005. He made 111 appearances for New Zealand, scoring over 7,000 runs, and remains the Black Caps’ most successful captain with 28 wins from 80 matches.
Earlier this month, Fleming stepped down as head coach of Chennai Super Kings and its subsidiaries. This announcement followed CSK’s eighth-place finish out of 10 teams in this year’s IPL, after a last-place finish in 2025.
Upcoming Challenges and Interim Plans
It is currently uncertain whether Fleming will be in position to lead England for the three-Test series against Pakistan, which is scheduled to begin at Headingley on 19 August. There is a possibility that an interim coach, likely assistant coach Marcus Trescothick, might oversee this series.
Former skipper Joe Root, who led the side in Stokes’ absence during the second Test against New Zealand, could also fill the captaincy role on an interim basis. The Telegraph suggests that Root is expected to be the captain for the Pakistan series. Harry Brook, the current England vice-captain, received backing from Stokes to be his successor, but was overlooked for the role earlier in the summer.
Fleming is expected to be firmly in place for England’s tour of South Africa, which is scheduled to start in December. The recruitment process was led by England’s managing director Rob Key, who, along with a headhunting company, conducted interviews with potential candidates.
Other names linked to the role included former England coach Andy Flower, who ruled himself out, and former Australian head coach Justin Langer, who stated he had not been contacted by the ECB. Former England batter Jonathan Trott, Richard Dawson, Gareth Batty, and Australians Tom Moody, Darren Lehmann, and Ryan Campbell were also among those mentioned as potential candidates.
The collaboration between Fleming and McCullum will be crucial for the success of the split-coach model, especially in managing multi-format cricketers and the workload of players like Harry Brook. The next Test assignment for England is the three-match home series against Pakistan, starting on 19 August.
