Argentina’s Preparations for the Final
Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni held a press conference ahead of the World Cup final against Spain. Scaloni stated that the team prepares for the final just as they do for every match, with a strong desire for a positive outcome and a willingness to analyse their opponent. He emphasised the need for Argentina to perform at their best to secure a victory. Scaloni noted that the team is well-known by their opponents, which adds to the significance of reaching the final. The coach expressed confidence in the team’s current state, despite acknowledging areas for improvement.
The team’s schedule included training sessions that were described as rushed, leading to a focus on resting the players. Scaloni mentioned that some players are not at full fitness, and their condition for the upcoming match will be assessed. A significant training session was planned, but in principle, all players were reported to be in good health. The coach highlighted the emotional connection the team has with their supporters, stating that it is impossible for the players not to be moved by the public’s enthusiasm. He believes that showing emotions is a natural part of life and makes the team more human.
Scaloni conveyed his gratitude, and that of the coaching staff, to the players for their sustained high-level performance over many years. He described their journey as incredible and an example for everyone, expressing hope for a victory in the final.
Scaloni’s Remarks on Lionel Messi and the Match-up
During the press conference, Lionel Scaloni also discussed his interaction with Lionel Messi following the match against England. Messi reportedly told Scaloni, “we are pure history,” to which Scaloni responded that Messi himself is the “pure history” and a legend. Scaloni expressed immense pride in hearing that the player he considers the greatest footballer in the world thinks highly of the current Argentina squad. He found it incredible that Messi has reached the final at his current age and in his present form, urging everyone to appreciate Messi’s contributions and his legendary status, as well as the group of players who have delivered wonderful years for the national team.
When asked if the World Cup final would be Messi’s last match with Argentina, Scaloni indicated he had no knowledge, suggesting it was a question for Messi himself. He added that Messi never ceases to surprise. Scaloni also provided insights into the upcoming match against Spain, noting that both national teams build their play around ball possession. He observed that their playing patterns revolve around the ball with some minor differences, suggesting a similar approach in that regard. Argentina has been analysing potential World Cup opponents since December, and Scaloni clarified that Spain had not received more analysis than any other team, cautioning against over-analysis. He concluded that Spain had shown improvement throughout the tournament, with their best performance against France.

Both Argentina and Spain held press conferences on July 17, 2026, in New York, United States, ahead of the final match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
