A selection of top performers from the recent World Cup 2026 has highlighted several key players, including Kylian Mbappé, Marc Cucurella, and Jude Bellingham. These players were recognised for their significant contributions throughout the tournament, with some selections being more obvious than others.

Spain‘s dominance in the tournament was reflected in the defensive lineup, with the team conceding only once. Pedro Porro was chosen at right-back, playing a crucial role in the champion team. On the opposite flank, Marc Cucurella was an easy pick, with no opposing winger finding significant success against him. His performance was noted for limiting Lionel Messi‘s impact in the final. Cucurella, who has been a regular for Spain since mid-2024, is now considered among the best left-backs in world football.

Key Defensive and Midfield Selections

In the central defence, Pau Cubarsi, a 19-year-old Spaniard, was included, having also won the young player award. He was paired with Cristian Romero, who not only defended effectively but also contributed to attacking plays, initiating Argentina‘s comeback against Egypt from a two-goal deficit. Other central defenders considered included Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba from France, and Marc Guehi from England.

The midfield saw Rodri as an undisputed choice. His presence was central to Spain‘s control of the game. Among his midfield partners, Dani Olmo was selected, narrowly edging out Fabian Ruiz and Pedri. Olmo started all knockout matches, becoming increasingly vital as the tournament progressed. Pedri was noted for his high number of interceptions and world-class passing statistics.

For the goalkeeper position, while Spain‘s Unai Simon received the official award, Cape Verde‘s 40-year-old stopper Vozinha was highlighted for a memorable performance. Despite playing in the Portuguese second division, Vozinha’s saves against world champions Spain were particularly impactful, making him a memorable figure of the tournament.

Attacking Prowess and Standout Forwards

The attacking lineup featured three prominent names behind the central striker, who collectively scored 25 goals in the tournament. Kylian Mbappé, the Golden Boot winner, occupied the left forward position with 10 goals. He also demonstrated leadership in guiding France past Paraguay in the last 16. Mbappé’s 10 goals made him the tournament’s top scorer, despite France‘s semi-final exit.

On the right, Lionel Messi of Argentina was selected. While his goal-scoring slowed in the later stages after scoring eight goals in his first five matches, his role was instrumental in the semi-final comeback against England. Messi guided Argentina to the final and was recognised as the Silver Ball and Silver Boot winner.

Centrally, Jude Bellingham of England secured a spot. Bellingham’s inspirational performances included scoring seven times, a record for an England player at a World Cup. He also received the Bronze Boot award. His influence extended across all phases of the game, contributing crucial goals and demonstrating maturity and vision.

For the lone striker position, Erling Haaland was chosen. He was a consistent threat throughout the tournament, notably scoring a brace to defeat Brazil in the last 16. Haaland’s seven goals surpassed Harry Kane‘s tally by one, despite playing one less game. Norway‘s run to the quarter-finals was spearheaded by Haaland, who finished among the tournament’s leading scorers. An honourable mention went to Spain‘s Mikel Oyarzabal, who scored five goals and proved to be a more consistent threat than anticipated.

Other notable players shortlisted for the tournament’s best player award included Lamine Yamal and Ousmane Dembele. Yamal, a teenager, showcased fearless dribbling and creativity during Spain‘s title-winning campaign, while Dembele’s pace, dribbling, and creativity were key to France‘s attacking charge, contributing important goals and assists.
