Squad Announcements for Pakistan Series
England has announced its 16-man squad for the initial two Tests against Pakistan, featuring the return of Ollie Pope and Dan Lawrence. The series is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, 19 August, at Headingley. This marks the first Test appearance for England since the retirement of former captain Ben Stokes and the departure of head coach Brendon McCullum.
Joe Root will lead the side, taking on the captaincy role for the first time since his reappointment in July. Marcus Trescothick will serve as the interim head coach. The new head coach, Stephen Fleming, is set to begin his tenure with the team in December, with his first series against South Africa.
Player Returns and Absences
Dan Lawrence, who last played a Test two years ago, has been recalled due to his strong domestic performance. He is the second-highest run-scorer in Division One of the County Championship, accumulating 788 runs at an average of 65.66, including five centuries, across 13 innings. Lawrence is expected to bat at number six, filling a middle-order position that became vacant after Stokes’ retirement.
Ollie Pope also returns to the squad. He was previously dropped from the squad against New Zealand after a period of poor form during the Ashes Tests in Australia. Pope has also shown good form in the County Championship, scoring 510 runs at an average of 56.66 for Surrey, including five scores of 50 or more.
Jacob Bethell will miss the entire series due to a knee injury sustained during the ODI series against India in July. Jordan Cox, who made his Test debut against New Zealand at The Oval, is expected to bat at number three in Bethell’s absence. Sam Cook, an Essex seamer, is also included in the squad, marking his first return since last summer. He played one Test against Zimbabwe last summer.
Brydon Carse rejoins the team after a broken wrist prevented him from participating in the Indian Premier League and the start of the Test summer. Spinner Shoaib Bashir, who played in the first and third Tests against New Zealand, retains his place in the squad.
Selection Strategy and Future Outlook
Marcus North, England’s men’s national selector, stated that the squad for the first two Tests aims to balance emerging talent with the necessary experience to face a strong Pakistan team. He noted that Stephen Fleming was involved in the selection discussions, highlighting the importance of aligning the selection strategy with the long-term vision for the team, especially as Fleming prepares to take over as head coach.
Notably, Sam Curran and Rehan Ahmed, who were considered potential replacements for Stokes, were not included in the squad. North explained that Curran has had a heavy workload and has been dealing with some minor issues, making him not quite ready for the Test squad at this time. Regarding Ahmed, North mentioned that the team felt it was crucial to go with their best six batters, with Jamie Smith at number seven, which led to Lawrence’s inclusion at number six.
North also addressed the possibility of Ben Stokes reversing his international retirement, stating that until Stokes makes himself available for selection, the focus remains on the currently available players to build a strong and competitive team.
