Post-Match Altercations Draw Criticism
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has voiced strong disapproval regarding the conduct of Argentina players following the World Cup final. De la Fuente described the behaviour as “intolerable” and “unacceptable” in comments made to Spanish television.
The incidents occurred at New York New Jersey Stadium immediately after Spain secured a 1-0 victory in extra time on Sunday, dethroning the defending champions. As Spain’s players celebrated their second World Cup title, several confrontations took place on the field.
Among the reported incidents, Nahuel Molina and Leandro Paredes were seen clashing with Spain’s Rodri and Eric García, respectively. Paredes also confronted Spain’s Gavi. Rodri, the Spain captain, was reportedly hit in the stomach by Molina.
De la Fuente stated that he did not witness these events at the moment they happened, as he was celebrating with his teammates. However, upon reviewing the scenes, he found them to be completely unacceptable. He noted that players of such stature, whom he had previously praised, should not engage in such behaviour.
FIFA has initiated an investigation into the post-match events. A disciplinary prosecutor has been appointed to examine whether there were any violations of the world football governing body’s disciplinary code. The investigation will determine if disciplinary measures should be imposed on member associations, clubs, or individuals.
Argentina Assistant Coach Apologises
In a related development, Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala has apologised for his own involvement in an altercation with Spain midfielder Dani Olmo. Ayala described his action as a shove rather than a punch, acknowledging that his behaviour was regrettable.
Ayala explained that emotions ran high during the chaotic scenes after the final whistle. He expressed regret for losing control, stating that his position demands a different level of conduct regardless of provocation. He added that his initial intention was to separate players involved in a fight in the middle of the pitch, but he ended up becoming part of the confrontation.
Television footage showed Ayala approaching Olmo and making contact with the Spain midfielder, who did not retaliate. Ayala indicated that he would apologise to Olmo in person if they meet. He stressed that such incidents should be left behind once they occur.
De la Fuente commended his own players for their composure amidst the provocations. He highlighted their exemplary behaviour in handling what he described as “acts of aggression” and “provocations,” which he believed could have escalated further. He praised his squad for maintaining their professionalism at MetLife Stadium.
During the medal ceremony, the Spain squad formed a guard of honour for the Argentina players as they walked to the podium to receive their medals from US President Donald Trump. However, when Rodri lifted the trophy minutes later, most of the Argentina squad reportedly turned their backs on the ceremonial moment.
FIFA has not yet provided details on the scope of its investigator’s remit, nor has it indicated whether witness statements from Spain players and staff will be sought. There is no specified timetable for any potential cases, and it remains unclear when any bans for Argentina players might apply, as the team does not have competitive games scheduled in the immediate future.
The investigation by FIFA will focus on the incidents that unfolded after Spain’s 1-0 victory in extra time on Sunday.
