Faf du Plessis and Jonty Rhodes are taking a significant step into team ownership in the European T20 Premier League, aiming to develop local talent in Dutch cricket. They co-own the Rotterdam Dockers, one of six franchises competing in this new league, which seeks to boost cricket across Europe.
The inaugural season of the ETPL will run from August 26 to September 20, featuring teams from cities like Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and Edinburgh. Du Plessis emphasized the importance of local Dutch players for the success of his team, stating, “It’s not your overseas players that win you competitions, it’s the local players.” This reflects his commitment to nurturing homegrown talent.
Rhodes echoed this sentiment, highlighting that the ETPL aims to create pathways for identifying and developing local talent. He remarked, “The ETPL offers exactly that, creating pathways to identify, nurture, and scale talent, and ultimately strengthening the game across Europe.” This initiative is part of a broader effort to elevate cricket’s profile in regions where it has traditionally lagged behind other sports.
In addition to fostering local talent, the franchise model is gaining traction in Europe. Five of the six franchises have already been sold for a total value of £11.1 million over a ten-year period. The tournament is co-owned by Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan, adding a layer of celebrity appeal to its launch.
Du Plessis brings extensive experience from various franchise leagues worldwide and sees great potential in this venture. He expressed enthusiasm about entering team ownership at such a pivotal time for European cricket. Meanwhile, officials have indicated that further developments regarding the remaining franchise sale are expected soon.
As preparations for the inaugural season continue, both Du Plessis and Rhodes remain focused on their vision of enhancing cricket in Europe while providing opportunities for aspiring players. The Rotterdam Dockers aim not just for competition but also for community engagement and development.
