The decision to not include Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in India’s recent series against Ireland has sparked debate among former cricketers. While some, like Sunil Gavaskar and Mohammed Kaif, advocated for his inclusion, others, such as R Ashwin, supported the team management’s approach.
India’s series defeat to Ireland highlighted what some critics describe as inconsistencies in the team’s selection process. Historically, such series against lower-ranked teams have been used to introduce new talent to international cricket without significant pressure. However, Sooryavanshi remained on the bench throughout the series.
Debate over Sooryavanshi’s omission
Sunil Gavaskar expressed his view that Sooryavanshi’s current form should have guaranteed him a spot in the playing XI. Speaking to AajTak, Gavaskar suggested that the series in Ireland presented an ideal chance to test young players. He noted that while there was no guarantee of victory with Sooryavanshi, it was an opportunity to try a new player.
Gavaskar further asserted that Sooryavanshi should be included in the upcoming series against England, starting from the first match. He suggested that out-of-form batters should be benched to accommodate the young player, either as an opener or at number three. He emphasized that playing Sooryavanshi could potentially surprise England.
Mohammed Kaif echoed similar sentiments on his YouTube channel, questioning the consistency of the selection logic. He pointed out that if the team was aiming for the best XI, Sooryavanshi’s name should have been considered, especially given his recent performances. Kaif highlighted that different rules seemed to apply to different players, calling Sooryavanshi’s exclusion shocking.
Former Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary criticized the coaching staff for adhering to pre-conceived notions rather than recognizing current form. He argued that while an assistant coach stated that opportunities for youngsters should not come at the cost of existing players, Sooryavanshi’s strong form warranted his inclusion. Tiwary noted the inconsistency in decision-making, particularly when compared to relying on players who performed well in a previous T20 World Cup.
Alternative viewpoints on selection
In contrast to these opinions, former India spinner R Ashwin offered a different perspective on his YouTube channel. Ashwin argued that there was no immediate place for Sooryavanshi in the current XI. He explained that players like Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, who do not participate in Test or ODI cricket, rely on the T20 format to maintain their relevance within the team structure.
Ashwin suggested that if a place were to be made for Sooryavanshi, it should be during tours like the one to Zimbabwe, where the incumbent openers might not be present. He maintained that while Sooryavanshi’s merit demands a place, it should not come at the expense of the current openers. He concluded that the decision made was appropriate, considering the circumstances.
Sooryavanshi’s strong performances, including winning an award in the IPL and scoring a rapid 94 off 29 balls in a final in Dambulla with India A, underscore his potential. The upcoming five-match series against England presents a new challenge for the team management regarding selection decisions.

The debate surrounding Sooryavanshi’s debut continues as India prepares for the series against England.
