The Indian Navy’s Mahendragiri frigate, equipped with advanced stealth technology, was officially handed over on May 1, 2026. This event marks a significant milestone in India’s indigenous naval capabilities and highlights the progress made under Project 17A.
Prior to this development, expectations centered around the completion of Project 17A, which aimed to enhance the Indian Navy’s fleet with modern warships. The Mahendragiri is the sixth and final ship of this project, showcasing approximately 75% indigenous content in its construction.
With dimensions of 149 meters in length and weighing around 6,670 tons, the Mahendragiri can reach speeds of up to 28 knots and conduct naval operations for up to 45 days. It incorporates cutting-edge features such as eight BrahMos supersonic anti-ship missiles and sophisticated anti-submarine warfare systems.
Meanwhile, on the personnel front, the Indian Navy released the SSR Medical Admit Card for the Agniveer recruitment examination on the same day. Candidates are required to have passed Class 12 with specific subjects, and the written examination is scheduled for May 16, 2026. This recruitment initiative aims to bolster manpower within the navy.
Separately, a delegation led by Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi is currently on a goodwill visit to Myanmar until May 6, 2026. This mission underscores India’s commitment to strengthening maritime relationships in the region.
