A tragic incident unfolded on April 30, 2026, when a cruise boat capsized at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, resulting in the deaths of four individuals and leaving twelve others missing. The cruise was carrying twenty-nine passengers and two crew members at the time of the accident.
Survivors described harrowing moments as strong winds suddenly struck, despite a prior weather alert warning of adverse conditions. Eyewitnesses reported that they urged the operator to return to safety, but their warnings went unheeded.
Rescue operations were launched promptly, leading to fifteen passengers being rescued and transported to nearby hospitals. However, the search continues for those still unaccounted for.
The situation became even more heart-wrenching when rescuers recovered the bodies of a mother and her four-year-old son. In a tragic display of love, the mother was found clutching her child tightly in a life jacket.
Pradeep Kumar, one of the survivors, criticized the cruise’s safety measures. He stated, “There was no arrangement. Not all of us were given life jackets and had no option but share them among ourselves.” He further lamented that the crew should have prioritized passenger safety during such severe weather.
In response to this tragedy, Madhya Pradesh’s state minister Rakesh Singh announced a compensation package of ₹4 lakh for the families of the victims. This decision underscores the urgency for improved safety regulations within Madhya Pradesh Tourism.
