In a surprising twist during the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has disrupted the traditional dominance of the Dravidian parties by emerging as the single largest party. The elections, held on May 4, saw significant shifts in voter allegiance.
Before this election, expectations centered around MK Stalin and his ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which had been a dominant force in Tamil Nadu politics. Analysts anticipated another victory for Stalin, who had served as Chief Minister since 2019.
The decisive moment came when TVK secured 85 seats and gained a 34.72% vote share, translating to approximately 1.18 crore votes. In contrast, the DMK won only 41 seats, with around 24% of the vote share—approximately 84 lakh votes.
This shift has profound implications for both parties involved. MK Stalin notably lost his own constituency, Kolathur, to TVK candidate V S Babu by around 8,700 votes. Meanwhile, Udhayanidhi Stalin managed to secure his seat in Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni.
The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) also faced challenges, winning just 32 seats and trailing behind with a leading margin on only 15 seats. This election marks a significant decline for them as well.
Experts suggest that this election serves as a referendum on MK Stalin’s five years in power. Political analyst Sivakarthikeyan remarked, “Congratulations to Vijay sir for achieving such a big victory and impact in his first election.” Such sentiments reflect the potential shift in voter sentiment towards new leadership.
The results indicate a notable change in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, where traditional loyalties are increasingly being challenged. As Udhayanidhi Stalin stated, “The people of Tamil Nadu have delivered their verdict, and we humbly accept it.” This acknowledgment signals a readiness for adaptation among established parties.
