Manchester City has announced the appointment of Enzo Maresca as the club’s new head coach. The Italian has signed a three-year contract, marking his third spell at the club. Maresca, who previously served as Pep Guardiola‘s assistant during City’s Treble-winning 2022-23 campaign, succeeds Guardiola, who led the team for 10 years.

Maresca’s appointment follows his roles as manager at Leicester City. He described the new role as a “huge challenge,” acknowledging the high expectations. “Probably the reason why I am here is also because the idea from the club is to maintain the same style of football, the same idea,” Maresca stated. He emphasized his commitment to winning and achieving significant milestones.

Maresca’s Return and Philosophy

This return marks Maresca’s third tenure with Manchester City, having previously managed the Elite Development Squad in the 2020-21 season and served as an assistant coach. Manchester City Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak highlighted Maresca’s alignment with the club’s values and his evolving football philosophy. “He is one of Pep’s assistants at one point in his career so definitely – he will tell you – he is going to have taken a lot of inspiration in the philosophy of Pep, and you see that in his football,” Al Mubarak said, adding, “But he has also evolved his own philosophy.”

Al Mubarak expressed confidence that fans would appreciate Maresca’s approach, anticipating that the team would continue to grow stronger under his leadership. He noted Maresca’s eagerness for the challenge, stating, “The beauty with Enzo is he actually wants that challenge, he loves that challenge.”

Ferran Soriano, Chief Executive Officer, described Maresca as the “stand-out candidate,” praising his personality, vision for football, integrity, charisma, and passion. Soriano also acknowledged Maresca’s successes at Leicester, as well as his contributions during the historic Treble season.

Maresca’s coaching style is influenced by both Italian and Spanish football. His exposure to Guardiola’s Barcelona during his playing career, particularly while at Sevilla and Malaga, shaped his perspective on technical, possession-based play. His trusted assistant, Willy Caballero, who he met in Spain, is expected to rejoin him at Manchester City, along with Danny Walker.

Tactical Approach and Immediate Priorities

Maresca is known for his tactical acumen, often employing a 4-2-3-1 formation. His teams prioritize possession, aim to prevent counter-attacks, and seek dominance. This approach shares similarities with Guardiola’s style, emphasizing physical pressing when out of possession to win the ball high up the pitch. While he faced criticism for slow build-up play at times during his previous managerial stints, Maresca typically uses fluid positional rotations to avoid stagnant attacks.

One notable tactical move under Maresca was the introduction of an asymmetric overlapping full-back, Malo Gusto, in a Club World Cup final. This tactic reportedly created space for Cole Palmer in a 3-0 victory against Paris St-Germain in New Jersey.

The new head coach’s immediate agenda includes addressing key player matters. With midfielder Rodri entering the final 12 months of his contract, securing a new deal for the Spain captain will be a priority. Additionally, Maresca will need to decide on his number one goalkeeper, as he prefers a shot-stopper who is proficient with their feet. The choice will be between potential candidates.

Manchester City players are scheduled to report for pre-season on July 20.
